What makes a school your top choice?

Lately I have been lost in knowing what is considered a top choice. Once was Michigan State University but other complications appeared and I’ve became more aware that it was too close to home ( ten minutes away). Second was University of Michigan but I was deferred and now my chances of acceptance are virtually lower than any application they have filed, with the deferrel I gain interest in other schools as well and became alerted that University of Michigan too may be a bit too close to home than preferred.

I ask others what makes a school their top choice to get an ideal if in fact I do have one but just lost it. I like University of Minnesota- Twin Cities a lot and could see it as a top choice but not currently as the only top choice. I also like Boston University, GWU, UIUC, NYU etc… One school I was accepted into ( great school) University of Iowa ( another University of Arizona) although I could see myself happy at the school with great education its not a top choice.
