I’m a high-school senior going through the college process. My GPA is a 4.0, my APs and SATs are great but somehow I feel like that’s not enough. When I talked to people about this feeling back in September and October, everyone told me the same thing. They told me to make sure I had great essays and to make my interview spectacular.

So, with that being said, what do you think matters more to colleges? Essays or interviews?

There are probably exceptions to this rule, but in my experience and opinion, interviews are not in the same league with essays. I believe essays are often determinative, while interviews, I suspect, are rarely determinative.

That’s how I feel! To admissions the essay matters more. All my interviewers have told me that the interview barely matters but I still wasn’t sure…

Only one person interviews you (with rare exceptions). However, your essay is potentially read by many people in admissions and is more concrete. Anyone can have an off-day during an interview, but the essays should have gone through several drafts and should be polished.

The essays are ultimately more important (unless someone did or said something really stupid during the interview).

Essays are absolutely more important because this is what the admissions dept. can hold in their hand and discuss. It makes you an individual as opposed to a number in the thousands of applications a college or university gets. The essay must be dramatic and captivating from word one.

Essays matter more - but a good impression is a must in the interview. Like davidm67 said - you really have to intrigue your audience with your essay, it’s the only part of the app that you can personalize. Everything else is fill-in-the-blank. This is a personal section that should reflect about what you can bring to the table at their college.
