What Men Want

It’s been said that the most un-answerable question in the world is “What do women want?” The best of them dream of Johnny Depp, have affairs with Vronsky (Anna Karenina), and marry Ari Onasis. So who can figure out what they want?

With guys, there is no such mystery. We want some beauty, some genuineness, some mystery, a lot of backbone, the guts to watch our back, and an ability to hit the road without spending an hour messing with their hair. But most of all, the ability to tell the difference between slick phoney guys and the real deal. I’m talkin’ about:

Claudia Cardinale in “Once Upon a Time in the West”

Tuesday Weld in “Thief.”

Rachel McAdams in “Wedding Crashers”

Joanna Going in “Wyatt Earp”

Joanna Pacula in “Gorky Park”

Linda Hamilton in “Terminator II”

Eva Marie Sainte in “North By Northwest”

Jean Arthur in “Only Angels Have Wings”

Rosario Dawson in “Sin City”

Lena Olin in “Unbearable Lightness of Being”

Renee Zellwiger in “Jerry McGuire”

Robin Wright in “State of Grace”

Claire Forlani in “Meet Joe Black”

JLo in “Out of Sight”

Barbara Stanwyck in “Meet John Doe”

Kate Beckinsale in “Underworld”

Michelle Meyrink in “Real Genius”

Lauren Bacall in “To Have and Have Not”

Renee Russo in “The Thomas Crown Affair”

Katherine Hepburn in – well – practically everything, but mostly “African Queen”

Donna Reed in “It’s a Wonderful Life”

Daryl Hannah in “Roxanne”

Myrna Loy in “The Thin Man”

The Queen in 300 was pretty cool, if a bit cold.

You can have JLo.

I’ll second Myrna Loy in The Thin Man.

Julie Christie in Don’t Look Now.

Keira Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Catherine Zeta-Jones in Mask of Zorro.

Audrey Hepburn in any movie she ever did…

I get it. You want her to be super cute, nice enough to like you, and strong enough to hit any bad guys that come near you;)

Although Audrey probably would have to hit them with her purse.

What about Cameron Diaz in Something About Mary?

I would hardly call Renee Zellwigger or Jean Arthur “super cute.”

Agree with Russo in “Thomas Crowne.” Her character in “Tin Cup” was also interesting. Also agree with Hannah in “Roxanne.” Is “Don’t Look Now” the one where Julie Christie had the marathon love scene with Donald Sutherland? Hot. But it would be tough to beat her character in “Dr. Zhivago.”

Audrey H. is a little too fragile and high-maintenance for my tastes (which also leaves out just about any Diane Keaton character). Am I the only one here who’s partial to gals who are perfectly willing to kill spiders? Katherine Hepburn is an interesting choice…but “African Queen”? Donna Reed in “It’s a Wonderful Life” is also a very interesting choice.

I agree, Dad of Sam, JLo usually isn’t my cup of tea, either. But her character in “Out of Sight” was quite interesing.

I can understand how the Diaz character in “Something About Mary” would make the cut. I didn’t include her merely because she seemed to gullible for my tastes (not being able to see thru the pizza guy/architect?). Also, Diaz herself does nothing for me (and never did, even before Timberlake used her for a floor mat).

OK but any girl who is willing to mousse her hair with
oh nevermind

My friend thinks Keira Knightley is hot. Yeah, I agree. I liked her in Love Actually and Pride & Prejudice.

Wow - Rene Russo in Thomas Crown…do they really make women like that?

How about Maureen O’Hara as Mary Kate Danaher in The Quiet Man?

Keira Knightley is an attractive actress, but too skinny.

Have to mention Virginia Madsen as Maya in Sideways…plus Dune.

The one I married.

She loves me, even when she shouldn’t.
She worries about me and my illnesses.
Get’s mad at me, but gets over it.
She laughs at my jokes, even when their bad (rarely)
She’s makes me feel I did better in the marriage.
She likes sports.

Of course when we met, it didn’t hurt that she had Selma Hyeks shape.

And as a bonus, she was a ice skater, gymnyst and cheerleader with an mensa worthy IQ.

The foolish thing she ever did was say “yes” about 24 years ago.

It’s good you appreciate your wife, Opie. I was hoping to see “wife” on some of these lists but whatever.

Rene and Jean are super cute compared to most of us girlies.

“It’s good you appreciate your wife, Opie. I was hoping to see “wife” on some of these lists but whatever”

PS also because if she ever comes across this, I get “awww” points.

For the record, I’ve never answered the “does this make me look fat?” question either. :)

“Does this make me look fat?” is a piece of cake. “You are beautiful, sweetheart!” is the correct answer.

I guess that’s what the extra five years gets me.

“Does this make me look fat?” is a piece of cake. “You are beautiful, sweetheart!” is the correct answer"

Actually, I have my own answer for that question and it’s a bit randy baby, yea. :)

What men want: Miriam Hopkins in “Designs for Living” (1933)

<a href=“Latest Stills - IMDb”>Latest Stills - IMDb;

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023940/

One of the best lines spoken in movies, something like…

Gary Cooper: “We can’t do this, [Fredric March] is in London, we have a gentleman’s agreement.”
Miriam Hopkins laying back on the chaise longue, “It’s true we had a gentleman’s agreement, but unfortunately, I am no gentleman.”

and,

Do you love me?
Miriaml: “Oh, Max, people should not ask that question on their wedding night. It’s either too late or too early.”

and,

Miriam: “I’m sick of being a trademark married to a slogan.”

Raquel Welch, even now.

Julie Christie in Dr. Zhivago. Struggling to make her way under difficult circumstances, and subjec to brutish attention from her antagonist, but looking absolutely smashing in every instance.
