What more do I need?

I’m a current sophomore with a 94.5 (out of 100) weighted GPA and my extracurriculars include:

  • French horn player that was in a band that won a slightly competitive North American Championship
  • Part-time Cashier at fast-food restaurant, about to be promoted to trainer after only being there 6 months
  • Traveling to Austria and Czech Republic to perform with a local Youth Symphony that requires an audition, not just paying to go
  • Future Honors societies: tri-m, Science NHS, NHS
  • Have volunteered over 100 hours of service to a local Youth Court in the past two years

I took 3 honors classes (maximum allowed) freshman year, 3 full year and one semster honors courses this year (all but honors chemistry), and I will have 3 ap and 2 honors next year, and 5 ap classes senior year.
I know I need more extracurriculars, but I do not know where to start. I am unathletic
Schools I am interested with intended major
WashU in STL (Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology)
Northeastern in Boston (Behavioral Neuroscience)
Michigan Ann-Arbor (Biopsychology, cognition, and neuroscience)

What more do you need for what?

@CottenCandyTrill for getting into WashU, Northeastern, and Michigan Ann-Arbor I believe

I think you have a good chance, though I find it quite irrelevent to mention your potential promotion for cashier job,it makes it look like nothing is really going for you.A suggestion from me would be to get involved in more ec’s,definitely unique ones,so you can stand out which is a plus for college admissions.

GGet thoroughly prepared for SAT/ACT over the summer and try to get a score in the 99 percentile for UMich.

Try and find some EC that align with what you want to study. Really prepare for the SAT and ACTs. Without these test scores it is really hard to chance you. Just knowing your GPA tells us nothing about your school and where you stand. Are you in the top 1%, 10% or 50%?

School does not rank which will help me because we have a very competitive academic rank. I could give you a guess on where I stand rank wise, but honestly there is no way I would be able to accuratley guess. I got a 24 act freshman year with no prep. I do not think I will have a problem with getting my act into low 30’s and my goal is a 32. I am probably going to take an act prep class over the summer

Even schools that do not rank will provide GPA percentiles. 94.5 weighted in a bit low but I was thinking maybe your school is very competitive and if that 94.5 is top 5% you have a better chance. If it is only top 50% your chances are not good. The mid 50% of ACT scores at Northeastern (while is the least competitive of the schools you listed) is 31-35. I suggest you really prep to retake the ACT and maybe consider the SAT also.

^ I doubt Northeastern has a mid 50 ACT of 31-35. Even UMich is only 30-34 (or 29-33 depending on which report you look at).

@billcsho - you appear to be correct. According to the NE common data set https://provost.northeastern.edu/uds/facts/common-data-set/
the middle 50% ACT is 31-34.

@123Mom456 @billcsho The middle 50% ACT for Northeastern is 31-34

I stand correct and typed too fast. Yes 31-34. Point still being it is quite a bit above the OP’s current 24 and even if OP meets their goal of a 32 these are selective schools.

my 24 was freshman year with literally no preparation and I just showed up and winged it. I plan on taking the ACT Junior year like a normal person so I do not think it will be hard to get my 24 up. I have taken practice ACT scores this year and have gotten 28’s and last year I had not taken Algebra Two so I was not fully prepared on the math section

Why would you even take a test without preparation. Now that you got 28 in practice test in sophomore year, it goes inline with your ACT 24 in freshmen year. Your projected score in junior year should be 30+ if you do continue to practice.
