Little Miss Sunshine - funny and generally “feel good” .
Children of Men- hard to watch at times but definitely a worthy movie. Made me cry.
The Queen-exellent Helen Mirren.
Devil Wears Prada- Meryl Streep( the movie itself didn’t impress me that much)
Prestige, Casino Royale.

I rented “Little Miss Sunshine” for $1.50. It was worth the rental but don’t think it was worth ticket price. A movie H and I both thought was really good was “The Pursuit of Happyness”.

I thought it was a good movie. The gratuitous violence and not so subtle Christian allegories could have been toned down a bit, but otherwise it was a very entertaining movie.

I really enjoyed Borat. Met my expectations for a film adaptation. I just dislike when people quote it; it’s turning into another Napolean Dynamite.

I haven’t seen many of the oscar contenders, so I can’t say much there.

And by Pixar I include the Dreamworks animated movies too–can’t keep straight which is which!

And how could I forget Pride & Prejudice? It was wonderful-costumes, period dancing & music, and the scenery & interior shots were like something out of a painting!

Little Miss Sunshine - it’s always great to see an excellent indie film crossover to become a box office and popular hit. A fabulous cast and a smart script combined to make this one of my favorites of the year.

The Queen - superb performance by Helen Mirren. A beautiful glimpse into the truly unique weirdness of the monarchy.

Shut Up and Sing - A great look at the power of the spoken word, and frightening insight into the hate that fills some people. Lots of wonderful music, too!

Mad Hot Ballroom - Although a 2005 movie, I didn’t see it til 2006. This was my favorite of the year. A lovely, funny, sad, poignant look at fifth graders in New York City during their schools’ ten week program to learn ballroom dancing, and the end of program competition. A great film that anyone and everyone will enjoy.

I saw so few movies this year… I really enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada, The Queen and The Good Shepard. I think the last of those three was my favorite.

Haven’t heard of Shut Up and Sing, but since I sing in my church’s choir, I’ll see if my DVD club has it. Mad Hot Ballroom was very good – I saw it with my son when we were in Lewisburg, PA on a college visit. You could say I trapped him into going – definitely not his usual film fare, but he loved it.

One movie we rented over the holidays was The Chorus, a French film from just a year or two ago. About a school for troubled boys in the 40s and how singing in a choir helped . . . well, I’ll let you see it. It was just wonderful

As my son said about Little Miss Sunshine - “odd subject matter for a movie that made us all hoot.” Luckily we watched it at home and while I am normally not a fun of slapstick, my laughter would have been embarrassing out in public.

Watched “A Hard Day’s Night” over the holidays. I know it doesn’t fit this category, but it was such fun watching with the boys, who have finally seen the light and appreciate the Fab Four.

We spend a certain amount of our “movie time” introducing the teens to classic movies they missed b/c they were too young the first time around. Just saw Forrest Gump again for that reason, but it is only one of dozens we could watch.

I think I only went to the movies twice in 2006, and I saw Little Miss Sunshine and Over the Hedge.

Little Miss Sunshine was great, IMO - I thought it was both funny and moving, and it hit some kind of emotional chord in me, because I was choked up for most of the movie.

16 Blocks
V for Vendetta
Inside Man
Blood Diamond
The Departed
Last King of Scotland
Munich
The Prestige
Devil Wears Prada
Thank You for Smoking

I absolutley hated Little Miss Sunshine. I agree that it was forced and disjointed and contrived. So disappointing, because I love Alan Arkin, Greg Kinnear, & Steve Carroll. The only movie more disappointing this year was Art School Confidential.

Loved, loved, loved Cars & Night at the Museum. Devil Wears Prada & Nacho Libre were enjoyable.

Did anyone see For Your Consideration? It came & went so fast, we missed it.

I also liked Munich. Great film to see with teenagers.

Just saw Blood Diamond. DiCaprio–other than the accent which took an Australian walkabout for the first half of the movie–was a believeable ex-pat mercenary but Connelly? With that perfect bronzed skin and clean shiny hair and unbuttoned safari shirt? Gimme a break. I know a few field correspondents and they don’t look like that. The women who sell newspaper advertising in foreign countries look like that.

Bad casting and it ruined the movie. The idiots could have left that love angle on the floor. The movie didn’t need it. Also TOO LONG. We left early because we knew everything that was going to happen after Leo had his fifteen minute Cruise-esque closeups. TOO PREDICTABLE.

Looking forward to seeing Last King of Scotland, Notes on a Scandal

Yes, Blood Diamond was disappointing. It was essentially an action/intrigue movie but then they layered all that diamond stuff over it, as if they wanted viewers to feel virtuous for sitting there. I don’t believe that diamonds caused the civil war in Sierra Leone, and if they did, the movie certainly didn’t explain why or how. I will say, however, that Leo did a pretty good job of acting.
