What Movies Did you Love in 2006?

Oscars are coming up (nominations will be out on Tuesday Jan 23) and so it’s a good time to find out if CCers can put up their own list of Best Films. I’ll start with mine: Little Miss Sunshine, Letters from Iwo Jima, Dreamgirls, The Queen, and . . . well, I have yet to see Pan’s Labyrinth and Children of Men, so I’ll just stop there.

I can recommend Children of Men, a difficult but highly worthwhile film.

I’ve heard good things about, but have not seen, The Good Shepherd and Little Children.

Hey SuNa, I read the thread and I was like…Little Miss Sunshine all the way! And then I clicked it and that was your first one! Creepy.

I haven’t seen Dreamgirls but I think that will win a few awards.

Just because I’m from Philly…and I loved the music…“Invincible” is my choice. However, I was irked because they didn’t get the story quite straight…Vince Papale was NOT FROM SOUTH PHILLY nor did he ever work in the Philadelphia School District (He grew up in Glenolden, Delaware County and worked in Interboro School District). I’m not sure if Marky-Mark captured Vince quite right, either.

DD and I have a pending date to see Dreamgirls…I want to rent Little Miss Sunshine soon!

Little Miss Sunshine!!!

I was going to say the exact same thing when I saw the topic:

Little Miss Sunshine!!

Yeah Little Miss Sunshine was great.

When I saw the topic, I wasn’t sure if I should post anything because I didn’t see that many movies but there was one I did see and thought was really good…Little Miss Sunshine. It is just that I hadn’t seen that many so…but it seems that others who may have seen more than I did, still thought this one stood out, so I guess I’ll post anyway! I do plan to see Dreamgirls very soon.

The Devil Wears Prada (very pleasant surprise) was my favorite of this year! Who knew Meryl Streep could play such a *****…

Little Miss Sunshine was alright, but quite weird in a few spots…

Haven’t seen much anything else, I’m poor…

I forgot, I also saw Devil Wears Prada…on video. That was also good. Little Miss Sunshine was funnier.

You know, I wanted SO BADLY to love Little Miss Sunshine (for a whole lot of reasons!)… but it just didn’t grab me. I wasn’t offended or insulted or disturbed… I just didn’t find it funny, I found it forced and disjointed. I didn’t hate it, it was an entertaining little movie, but I do hope it isn’t named the best picture of the year. That would be really disappointing.

Children of Men…I hear it was the best movie of the year. The Departed also got rave reviews from the intellectuals of my circle

It’s not eligible for awards, but as far as I’m concerned, the best movie of the year was the newly released Director’s Cut of the 2005 Crusades movie Kingdom of Heaven.

The theatrical cut of this movie got poor reviews and made almost no money, but that’s largely because the studio forced Ridley Scott to edit it so extensively that it was little more than a bunch of poorly connected action scenes. The full-length version is almost an entirely different movie, and it includes a devastatingly good performance (almost entirely missing from the theatrical version) by Eva Green (Daniel Craig’s love interest in Casino Royale), who is one heck of an actress. The Director’s Cut is definitely worth at least a rental, if you can find it.

that is interesting to hear that about little miss sunshine
I had wanted to see it, just because I have had a serious thing for Alan Arkin since I saw Heart is a Lonely Hunter in the 60s.

I didn’t realize it had gotten so many great reviews elsewhere because locally they made it sound mediocre to awful

Keeping in mind I don’t see many movies
I really thought

  • Thank you for Smoking- The Queen- Casino Royale- & the Illusionist* were very good-
( which were almost all the movies that I have seen recently- but Children of Men is playing at my local theater that I was thinking about seeing- I want to see Pan’s Labyrinth also)

I agree with mootmom, about Little Miss Sunshine. Frankly, IMO, it was cute and a little entertaining, but nothing more. I cannot imagine this movie winning picture of the year. I have not gone out to see the other movies. I usually wait for them to show up on DVD, unless it is a “must see”. Changing the subject for a moment, I just saw The First Wives Club on DVD, and I enjoyed it. My son really enjoyed Casino Royale, and my mother enjoyed The Queen.

I don’t think of Little Miss Sunshine as “great film”. It’s plusses are that it was very entertaining and funny. The actors really fit their roles (well cast) and were very good at acting. The storyline was clever. It isn’t cinematic greatness, but surely was an enjoyable film. I can’t say “best picture” as I barely saw that many films. I simply enjoyed seeing this one. I’m not sure it is a “best”. But watch it if you want to be entertained!

I thought that Casino Royale was a great movie; and I thought that Marie Antoinette was a pretty decent movie as well.

I love Toni Collette and Greg Kinnear, but I hated the script of ‘Little Miss Sunshine’. After the father dies, the whole thing became so predictable. What a waste.

I liked ‘Borat’ , the hysterical fake-documentary, (flame me, I don’t care). Millions of teenage Baron-Cohen fans saw that film. It might have been the biggest impact film of the year.

Also liked ‘Mad Hot Ballroom’ --but really --not a great year for my kind of movies…although I enjoyed bits of Talledega Nights.

We’ve seen a bunch of great movies over the past few weeks. Our favorites were The Departed and Volver (the Almodovar movie with Penelope Cruz). We also liked Dreamgirls a lot. S saw Pan’s Labyrinth while we were seeing Dreamgirls and swears by it; he also raves about Children of Man. Little Miss Sunshine was enjoyable, but not in a class with any of the recent movies. I wound up seeing The Devil Wears Prada three times, which has to be some kind of record for a straight man, and I enjoyed it every time.

Little Miss Sunshine was fun.

Over the Hedge was more fun. My favorite movie every year usually ends up being the Pixar animated one.

National Treasure was a hoot, if you like the Indiana Jones adventure type film. They wisely ran through the Templar/Masonic nonsense in just a couple of lines to set up what turned out to be a great movie, IMHO.

I plan to see Dreamgirls next.
