What must i do to transfer to stanford!

Stanford is my dream school but i was rejected as a freshman for fall 2009. I am going to enroll at Michigan Ann Arbor for Mechanical Engineering. I have already set my sights on transferring to Stanford for next year.

What does it take to transfer to Stanford? How many transfer students do they accept?
Should I do anything particular in my first year at Michigan to increase my chances of transferring.

Thanks

Hi Sridhar,
Once the final waitlist decision comes in next week, you and I will both be Stanford fall 2009 rejects =).

But with regard to your question,

1) Don’t go into college with that mentality. Seriously man, it’s not worth it. Ann Arbor is a great school and many would be humbled to go there. Try to enjoy your time there and make most of the school’s resources. You may end up liking it more than you could ever like Stanford.

2) Still bent on transferring? A lot depends on when you transfer. If you wish to transfer and join Stanford as a Sophomore, your high school profile will be given a lot of weight. If you wish to transfer as a junior, your college-work will have more weight.

3) Since your high-school profile is already out of your control, focus on college. Keep your grades as high as possible. Engage yourself on the campus community- give them the feeling that you can become an asset to Stanford’s campus just as you have at Ann Arbor.

4) You must have a compelling reason to attend Stanford. This goes way beyond a Freshman applicant’s “Why Stanford” essay. You’re already at college, so why is it that you wish to Stanford particularly. What does Stanford have that you’re not getting, and how significant is it for your life-long goals?

Bests!

thanks for the input…where are u joining this fall?

you’re very welcome. I’ll be joining Brandeis University

From the Stanford website

“Transfer applicants should be aware that transfer admission is considerably more competitive than freshman admission. In recent years, the admit rate for transfer students has been between 1-2%. Between 20 and 40 transfer student spaces are typically available each year, depending on our freshman to sophomore retention rate (usually 98%) and the number of freshman applicants who typically accept our offer of admission.”
