What Next? What Should You Do When You Earn An Average Score?

I retook the ACT 4 times, I got 23 as my highest score. I don’t want to retake the ACT again because I already got into Michigan State. Am I destined for mediocrity for the rest of my college career and life? What should I do? I have poor reading comprehension! If the test prep books that guaranteed a 36, would actually work then there would be no point. I blame natural selection! :(

Any examples of successful people that got average ACT scores? Do I fail at life if I got a 23? I know people that scored over 28 that barely study, and only do well because they are academically gifted. Exceptional slackers, bleh.

Well if you get a score good enough for your state school that is good enough. But did you study to get a 23? I only took it 1 time and didn’t study and got a 24(my reading and science score killed it). And if I did I knew I would get a 28+ but the way I feel is that score actually prepares you for the ACT. Reading is like the EOCT reading, math is math and I took every single math class offered at my school. And taking trig helped and I got a 28 in math with no review and prep. English is all the elementary rules plus all the important stuff you should know and reviewing should help. Take some quizes. Science is science and I got a 22 in it so I can’t really give tips.

get a tutor. You can’t blame the books for not helping you. No book “gives” you a 36, you have to work your a** off for it (of course, some people are naturally gifted).

I had my parents tutor me and I studied everyday for two yours since freshman year. I think that’s my best I can do. I seriously think I have a learning disability for reading. :(

What books did you use? Princeton Review and the Redbook are the best. I feel that english and math can be improved the most since you can teach yourself to get better. Science and reading all comes down to practice. I’ve increased both those scores from high 20s to mid 30s

I used Barrons, Princeton Review, Kaplan, and a lot more. I seriously think I have more than 20 ACT and SAT related books in my house. I think I’m just mediocre and stupid. Oh well, that’s the past. Now time for college! I’m just worried about getting into Eli Broad for accounting (you need to maintain a 3.5 in college), if I had difficulty with the ACT.

you should go to the doctor and see if you have a learning disability. You can get extra time for the ACT if you have a learning disability. And maybe you parents aren’t cutting it. Try a professional tutoring service, perhaps even Princeton Review.

There’s no reason to visit the doctor or feel ashamed of yourself. Your score is above average, and you have already gotten into Michigan State. Play to your strengths; there are people with amazing test grades and mediocre everything else and vice versa.

Don’t worry too much about it… the average ACT score is like a 21… you are above average… you are doing great (it’s just most ppl on here are severe overachievers)
