DW and I will be going to Sweden this summer - mid June. We’ll probably have 2 1/2 days in Stockholm. Besides the Vasa Museum, what should we be sure not to miss?
The Vasa is amazing. Then go here for lunch: http://www.ullawinbladh.se/en
I’d highly recommend spending a day doing an island cruise. The one I went on stopped at three different islands, all quite different from each other. We were served a buffet lunch and dinner.
The Skansa Open Air Museum is wonderful if you like seeing live recreations of how people lived and made things in other eras.
Oh, nice thread! We will be in Stockholm next year (2016) on a cruise. The Vasa is definitely number one on our list. We will only have one day - I don’t remember the specific times but probably in the 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. range.
The Nobel museum is kind of meh, but walking around Gamlastan is fun!
I would have never thought that I would find this place to be fascinating, but it certainly was. Lots of Swedish history!

Also cruising to Stockholm in 2016, mid-June, on the Viking Star. Stockholm will be our last port and planning to stay over a couple of extra days. I’m all ears…
If you only have a day, Vasa should be your number one destination!
I am leaving for Sweden on Monday and we will end our visit in Stockholm. I agree with others that the Vasa Museum, walking around Gamla Stan and a water tour are great activities. Skansen is interesting if you have time. The Absolute www.icebarstockholm.se is bound to get you some great belly laughs and good photos. www.abbathemuseum.com is a great place for any ABBA fan…especially for those of us who loved Mamma Mia! The sidewalk cafes on Kunsträgårdgatan are a great place to take a break. This trip we are going to try to wander over to Södermalm (island after Gamla Stan) as it is supposed to have a SOHO vibe to it. We are going to try the fotografiska museum and I am determined to head up to Sigtuna (oldest village/restored village in Sweden).
Are you traveling throughout Sweden?
Yes, we’ll be spending 10 days there. DW is a genealogy wiz and has traced part of her ancestry to the Forest Finns, so we’ll go to Orsa-Dalarna and Hassela. Also want to spend a day in Uppsala before flying back to the states.
dadx3 - you are a lucky man! I also do our family genealogy and dragged my husband even farther north than Hassela! Your distant Swedish relatives will love having visitors from America!
I assume then that you will be spending the Midsummer celebration in Dalarna - it is supposed to be a spectacular event. We are stopping for a couple of days in Dalarna on our way to Stockholm. If you have a car, you could easily stop in Uppsala on your way to Stockholm. Another option is to take a train from Stockholm to Uppsala as they are quite frequent. However, it may be too far to walk to Gamla Uppsala from the city center.
If you have a chance, read up on Norse mythology and Rune stones. This may make the viewing of the stones more enjoyable. In the majority of the stones there is a snake like figure (actually represents a serpent/dragon) winding it’s way around the stone. The runes/letters are written within the body of the serpent and read from head to tail. I think the dragon slayer’s name was Sigurd.
Uppsala is lovely. Doubtful you’ll have time, but it’s a nice bike ride to go out to the mounds north of the town.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. We’re planning on renting a car for the trip to Dalarna, Hassela and Uppsala. I think we might be in Dalarna for Midsommersfest. I also want to make sure we see enough of Stockholm, which was the impetus for my OP. Further suggestions more than welcome!
