What OTHER Schools if NYU says no?

For those applying ED to NYU, what other schools are on your list in case you don’t get in? My daughter says she only wants NYU, but she is now realizing she’d better start applying to other schools in case her dream doesn’t come true. So we’re wondering what schools might appeal to those who love NYU. SAT1 1390 (2190 with writing), GPA 3.5 from a very good public school.

Some schools I considered in addition to NYU were Georgetown, Boston College, Boston University, Columbia, the Uniersity of Chicago, and a few different schools within the University of London system.

Typically those who apply to NYU apply to Boston College, Boston University, some Ivies, and other top tier schools.

im applying to BU, GWU, James Madison, Syracuse, Geneseo, Northeastern, Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Penn State, McGill

A friend of mine who is a NYU freshman now applied to all eight Ivies, Tufts, Boston University, Skidmore and Swarthmore.

Buna, IzzyJ… esti cumva romanca?

Oricum, doar am vrut sa spun ‘hi’… Acum sunt la NYU, dar inainte am fost student la Universitatea din Bucuresti…

Buna, Daniel. Ce faci?

Actually, I’m living in Romania. I am not Romanian. Sorry! :o

Acum=now…and…that’s the only word I know…

Could you translate what you said?

Keep in mind, guys, that the OP asked the question, What if NYU says no? Chances are that if NYU says no, then most of those other schools you’re all listing would also be saying no, with the exception of a few on Vicki’s list.

My apologies, Catherine.

My NYU friends got rejected by Swarthmore and all the Ivies except Columbia (wait-listed), accepted at BU, Skidmore and Tufts. Unfortunately I don’t know ANY of her stats. (She lived in Italy while I lived here and in Malaysia and Vietnam. We weren’t so close we talked about grades in that much depth.)

Northeastern and Clark University might be matches for your daughter. I think they’re both in MA. You might also want to look at Uni of Rochester. Perhaps Pace University? A student who ED-ed NYU here also considered Pace.

If a big bustling city environment is one of the draws for her, other possible cities to scour are, of course, Boston and possibly Chicago. Pennsylvania might be another option.

In addition to NYU, I am applying to Cornell, Boston College, Providence College, Lehigh University, RPI, and the U of Rochester.

I’m applying as a transfer student to NYU. I’m also applying to Barnard College, and probably Brown next semester (they don’t release transfer apps yet, or I would be applying there currently as well). Since an urban or near-urban location is important to me, I also considered GWU, Georgetown, American, BC and Tufts. I am orginally from Atlanta, so I did not look at Emory because I would like to attend a college away from home, but it is also a respected school in an urban environment.

Thanks everybody. She wants an urban, not overly preppy school (since her high school is totally preppy and suburban). Hopefully NYU will work out, but who knows. The other applications must be done.

im also applying to bu, bc, tufts, northeastern, geneseo, syracuse, penn state, gwu, tulane

Fordham would be a good back-up.

For a totally different city experience, I would recomend the University of Tampa, its located IN the city, small with no football team, and its 20 mins from swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, Loved visiting that school!! Not as elite, but I had a friend who chose it over UPenn, go figure, it may be a fun experience.

Nice pick…and Tampa weather is 100 times better than NYC in my opinion haha.

I’m applying to Fordham (Lincoln Center Campus) and Columbia. Emerson in Boston is another back up. Since I’m an automatic admit to Texas A&M (and from texas), I’m considering going there if i don’t get in to any of my east coast schools and then transferring out.

im applying as a transfer to nyu but i am also applying to bu, bc, purdue, ou, tcu, smu (gotta have some safeties).

NYU is one of the few schools in the country that there is really nothing very similar to - BU is probably the closest, and its easier to get into, but there are still major differences between the two schools. USC also has some similarities but not that many. So, if NYU doesn’t work out, I suggest finding another school that is not necesarily like NYU but that your daughter could be happy at anyway.

Anonymous88 makes a very strong point. The inherent difficulty with a good number of NYU dreamers is that they aren’t applying simply because of its academics, prestige, or even its strong artist core; indeed they could find other programs as worthy, if not more so. They want the school, its energy, what it represents. There is just something about this school that touches so many young people’s imagination to the point where the often can’t see other possibilities fairly.
