What other top schools out of state could be affordable for me?

I’m interested in other top schools private or public schools in case I don’t get into any Ivies, Duke or Stanford; around the country and especially in schools such as UCLA, UC Berkley, NYU or UNC Chapel Hill. I don’t know how expensive these schools would be for me but I’m really interested in UCLA and NYU the most. I’m currently in rural NC and my parents earn about <35,000 a year. I was born in Los Angeles CA and lived there for about 11 years before moving here if that helps any. I’ve been told public schools out of state can be extremely expensive but I don’t know to what extent, other good suggestions for schools that would be affordable for me would be most appreciatiated private or public, I’m also trying to get into the medical field by the way. Thanks

If you’re a good student, you may have lots of excellent, affordable options: http://blog.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/blog/colleges-that-meet-100-of-student-financial-need/.

UCLA and Berkeley give NO…read that again NO need based aid to out of state students at Berkeley and UCLA. Plan to pay the $65000 cost of attendance if you are accepted there.

NYU does not guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students. Cost to attend is over $70,000 a year.

Frankly, as a low income student, I would suggest you scrap these three schools.

You are instate for UNC which is good. Assuming your Sat or ACT is outstanding and your grades continue use to be…Chapel Hill is a great choice. The school guarantees to meet full need for all accepted students.

You are a Sophomore in high school. You don’t have a SAT or ACT score yet. Or even a PSAT score. Your GPA is for ONE year of high school and it’s fine…but there is no way to predict what it will be for all four years.

Keep up the good work, and keep looking for colleges…you need an affordable sure thing for admission school on your list. Right now…your list doesn’t have one if those. Start by finding that school and build your list up from there.

If you are academics and ECs are excellent - you should choose Private Universities - they cover (based on your parents salary) everything - am confident about UPenn, Princeton, Harvard etc. However, public schools do Not have much money for OOS students (kind of make sense -taxpayers of that state pay to subsidize the education, right?).
Agree with others, in-state in the second best option!

Would go all in on Top Private Universities - write a great essay - you will have a good shot. In fact, many of the Ivies are looking to give admissions & aid to people from lower economic backgrounds Best of Luck!

Take the UC’s and other OOS publics off your list, except consider UVA since they do give generous aid to OOS.

Take NYU off your list because they also give horrible aid.

You’re not going to be able to form an appropriate app list at this point since you don’t have any test scores yet.

RE: interested in the medical field… then it won’t matter where you to got college. Just get the best grades you can.

BTW…do your parents own a business?

@kg2013 first of all…MOST private universities do NOT meet full need for all accepted students. They just don’t. Second, the schools you listed have 10% or under acceptance rates so even with tippy top scores etc, they are not a slam dunk for admissions.

This student needs to find a sure thing for acceptance college or two that will be affordable FIRST. Then build their list up from there.

At this point, this kiddo has grades from ninth grade and that’s it. Frankly, it’s good that he or she is starting to think about this…but they have very insufficient information to make informed choices about where to send college applications three years from now.

https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/ can be searched for tuition and fees. You need to include your own home state so that it pulls up the OOS rates in other states. It also does not factor in housing/meals/transportation/books/etc., so you need to account for that. When you look at individual college and university websites, search those websites for Cost of Attendance. Each institution publishes that information. They also have Net Price Calculators on their websites that you and your parents can run to see if you are likely to be eligible for financial aid.

NYU is a private institution, not a public one. It has a bad record for financial aid. If you like the notion of NYU because you think you’d like to be in NY City, there are plenty of other options that you can look at.

The only realistic way to afford to go out of state is to get a scholarship. The trade-off is usually “prestige.” UCLA, Berkeley, NYU, etc, will be most likely out of your price range. The south tends to be the most generous. Check out University of Alabama and LSU.

Remember, at this point, you’re only in the application phase. You have a greater than 90% chance of being turned down by all the schools you’re mentioning. Also, there are great in-state scholarships as well.

thumper1 - between OOS public school and Private school - you pay lot more in a public school - that is a fact especially for a person whose family makes around 35K! Also, you are wrong - they pay for everything! In fact, Harvard, wish I had the article link, talked about giving more admissions to poor families and making sure they can attend! Also, it is better to attend In State OK school than OOS school - again the chances of getting funding is much better for lower income families too!!
My advice still holds - if you can be the best in your school and have very good ECs - and write nice essays - Yes,Ivies and Private schools are harder to get in than the In-state schools - but it is a much better financial alternative than OOS public university!
Also, nobody said NOT applying to safe schools - do not go by naysayers – you have to have a mix of high reach school, low reach schools, safety schools etc. - also, you can apply for fee waiver if you are from a low income family!

@kg2013

There are 3000 colleges on this country. Many of those are private colleges. Yes, the ones you listed meet full need. BUT the vast majority of private colleges in this country do NOT meet full need for all accepted students.

Yes, If a student whose family earns $35,000 a year is lucky enough to be accepted to a college that meets full need for all, that student should see excellent need based aid. It as I said…these are competitive colleges, and admissions isn’t exactly a slam dunk for anyone.

You don’t need to remove all state flagships. Michigan is one school that offers financial aid for out of state students below a certain income amount.
