What "Perks" Do You Have At Work???

From various jobs I have received fuel oil and furnace discounts, free vacations for winning sales contests, a company swimming pool, saunas, and a community garden plot right outside the building, and free soap and shampoo.

My favorite perk was driving to the Nestle company store on the 3rd Friday of every month. The store was at an old chocolate plant that closed down later, and the smell of chocolate was out of this world. I filled two or three giant bags with chocolate, hot chocolate, coffee, Stouffers products, pastas, and everything else made by Nestle. The cost was always less than $10.

Abasket, sounds like a great job.

Tom1944, you talk a lot about retirement for somebody who likes his job…

Tonyk, chocolate is a good perk.

It will make no sense to stay at a certain point- at 62 my pension and ss will be more than my salary. If I was in a 401k I would stay forever.

Tom1944, do u know what u want to do when u retire?

I get free germs at school. :)

Marian - we have everything you need at our office to mail anything - scale, postage, plus an employee who goes there everyday. Is going to the PO really a big issue?

I have a healthcare business dealing with hospitals so they enjoy the following: getting stuck in a hospital for hours on lockdown, seeing dead people fall off gurneys at the morgue door, being exposed to every disease out there, and last but not least - the smell. Some hospitals smell so bad I wonder if they’re ever cleaned. What is that smell anyway?

I can work from home… it’s often a perk, but sometimes not. (I have a lot of early calls, weekend work, etc).

We have a fitness center at work. It’s not free, but it is very close.

dstark- not yet. I will do something just not sure what.

Tom1944…ok. Some people don’t retire well.

There probably it a bit of a selection bias … I doubt anyone would post … “I work my employees like dogs and provide nothing other than what is legally required”

Like Onward, I get free germs. Boogers, coughs, sneezes, whatever.
I also get free updates on all technology when my students show me how to do stuff. I get free fashion advice (from 12 year olds). I get free endorphins from being around those lovely caring silly kiddos. When I have to retire, I don’t know how I will manage.

I work from home, choose my own hours, travel as much (or little) as desired, have few tangible benefits other than loving my job and most of the folks I work with. Much of my work is unpaid but satisfying.

I do give my employees a uniform (embroidered golf shirt). I pay for their job travel. I give them flexibility to choose when they can work. I provide prepaid cell phones to those who are supposed to contact the public. I get a prepaid cell phone. We also provide liability insurance and D&O insurance.

H is a retired federal employee. He worked >44 years and loved his job so much he went back only weeks after retirement. He gets subsidized life and med insurance, defined benefit pension with COLA guaranteed for his lifetime and a lesser amount for my lifetime. He has flexibility over his hours but can’t work from home. Before the severe budget restrictions, he got paid travel and training–hasn’t had that for many years now.

Perks of my job as an RN: I can be a little late and I can leave a little early if the work is done. No one is relieving me nor I’m I anyone’s relief. Can be seen by the ER doc without any fuss for an illness. Prescriptions for various benign medications, such as antibiotics or Celebrex. Free flu shots. Free medical care such as blood work, XRays, ultrasounds, etc. Employee picnics 2 x a yr and a free luncheon for Nurse Recognition day. 120.00 uniform allowance per year. Reduced fee for exercise room with equipment. Free parking. 2 days a year paid for conferences. 4 personal days. I can wear a lab coat or scrubs. Reduced cost for meals in the cafeteria. Unlimited access to free online professional continuing education classes with credit.

A free birthday meal from the student cafeteria (staff doesn’t have one) that even the kids hate eating at.

Nope, no perks here.

We can get our company logo embroidered on any of our own clothes for $8. Aren’t y’all jealous of that?

I work at a community college. We can use the fitness center including pool at no charge, my family and I can take classes(credit or non credit – like driver’s Ed) free, discount tickets to any athletic or arts event, plus students who make me laugh almost every class–priceless. ;)

I guess free street parking if the lot is full. Cannot think of anything else.

I live/work overseas. The expatriate staff get int’l business class air travel for home leave trips back to home country every year. That means “lay-flat” beds & champagne instead of 20+ hours of agony.

I also get $1500 a year for professional development and another $1500 for graduate work.

Dog friendly office. Right now I think there’s 40 dogs that are approved to come to work. There’s a waiting list to get your dog approved to come in, but they usually let a few in every quarter.

Kitchen fully stocked with coffee, tea, breakfast food, fruit and other snacks

Very generous discount

Subsidized gym membership
