What petroleum engineering schools will I get accepted to?

I scored a 2060 on my SAT (M 800 R 550 W 710) and a 30 on my ACT (M 33 S 33 R 25 E 29). I go to high school in in Pittsburgh, PA. I am ranked second in my class of about 300. I will be a senior next year. I have taken all honors and AP classes throughout high school. Next year I am taking 5 AP classes. I am a member of NHS and I play varsity baseball. What petroleum engineering programs would likely accept me?

You won’t have any trouble getting into LSU and ULL. You should get into any state school in the south. I’m not up to date on Texas A&M’s and U Texas’s requirements, but their programs have been getting more competitive. However, you should be able to get in. Those are some solid scores.

I was considering doing Petroleum Engineering but you have to work in an oil refinery all day, which was a huge turnoff for me ;). If you get your SAT score up to 2100 you have a great chance of going to Texas which is one of the best Petroleum Engineering Universities.

That was my third time taking the SAT… I didn’t plan on taking it again. I mean it’s only 40 points away from a 2100. My number one choice would be to go to UT but I’ve heard that it is very difficult to get in for OOS students.

Petroleum engineers don’t work in an oil refinery, chemical engineers do. Petroleum engineers either work in the field, offshore, or in an office designing wells or determining reservoir output. A lot of people get that confused.

UT is difficult to get admitted and getting into PetE is very difficult. Honestly I think you will have a difficult time getting admitted to PetE at UT. Being OOS adds even more difficulty.

A&M is a little easier to get into.

Another question…Is my reading score going to hold me back? Do engineering schools take reading into consideration as much as math?

For UT they use the composite score. The 75% for the CR score is 670 so your 550 is low. 550 is actually the 25% for CR at Texas. The 2060 score is in the range.

You could retake the SAT or ACT and try to increase those scores.

You never know. Apply and see what happens.

BTW, my son’s #1 is UT and for PetE. We are in state and it is still difficult to get admitted and to get admitted to PetE.

I know for a fact that you could get accepted to University of Alaska Fairbanks. I know it’s not as pretty or as glamorous as Texas schools, but if I may put on my advice hat for a second…

I got my first degree from a large school (35,000+ students) and in a large program (300+ students per semester accepted). I did not know my professors very well (and never met my department head once) and was just ‘a face in the crowd’ for my entire degree program.

Up here at UAF, I have really gotten to know my professors. I can drop by any time to talk to them, they get to know their students and are very determined to make sure that you learn what you need to know. Fairbanks may not have the glamor and excitement of Austin or College Station, but the size of their programs means that unless you are a top 10 student every semester, you probably won’t get to know your professors very well.
