I had a lot of trouble with “Dude!..” most often used by people half my age at work.
I think my ear has gotten used to it, mostly.
Same with “My bad”. It doesn’t grate so much now.
When I was a surly teenager, I was used to respond with “Yeah” instead of “Yes” and hoo boy, one day my dad had had it and gave me an angry scolding that still stirs up unpleasant feelings.
“Played a factor” No, it was a factor or it played a part but it didn’t play a factor.
“No worries” - just overused at this point.
Tribe - finding your “tribe” . I know a lot of people use this in CC, but I just find it odd.
When an athletic score is 10-8 and the announcer says the lower scoring team is within 2. It is AT 2. Within 2 would be when the score is 10-9.
@Leigh22 Tribe…I can’t stand that! “Find your tribe, blah, blah, blah!” Sounds like a cult to me!
I also feel that the word “vibe” or “good vibes” is overused. Tone it down!
A hashtag I’ve seen that annoys me: #yourvibeattractsyourtribe: your vibe attracts your tribe. Sounds preachy to me
I also hate hashtags on Instagram and other social media. I can see businesses using them, it’s advertising. But, for regular people, what’s the point?
For some reason the #marriedlife hashtag bothers me the most…like why? People have been getting married for years…
Some other overused phrases, words, etc.
Boss: mom boss, boss babes, etc.
the mantra: “know your why” what does that even really mean? Sounds kind of phony. I’ve seen it used as a hashtag on instagram.
Also the word “empowerment” being used for everything!
Or mantras and inspirational phrases being used for every little thing!
Business people pretending they understand some biological terminology:
“Baked into our corporate DNA”.
“Ecosystem for ethical innovation”.
“It’s” where it has to be “its”. But I’m afraid it’s becoming a norm. And (shudder) “he’s” instead of “his”.
“Privelege” (usually comes from somebody on a high horse).
“Proactive”
Inability to use “me” and "I’ correctly. It’s not that hard, it really isn’t.
Everything seems to be ‘reimagined’ lately.
Banking reimagined.
Shopping reimagined.
Driving reimagined.
Sleeping reimagined.
Imagination reimagined.
The moment I hear ‘reimagined’ in an advertisement or anywhere else, I’m out.
“None of the schools we applied to gave my kid enough merit aid…”. The parental “We”. That drives me crazy. “We” are not applying… the kid is.
I forgot “Basic”
That girl who wears boots and a scarf and loves pumpkin spice lattes is so “basic.” Who cares?!
Oh and If I see “Bae” used one more time, I think I’ll scream! Same with “on fleek,” which just sounds dumb.
My D thinks the hashtag #squadgoals is overused. I agree…
I could go on and on here
We’ve been house hunting for several years and houses are always described as “stunning”. I’ve been “stunned” so many times, it’s a wonder I can get back up again!
From now on I will say find your cohort.
people calling their children “kiddo” and people calling universities “uni”
UGH
“The thing is, is that…”
That and the addition of an apostrophe to EVERY word that end’s in “s.”
Yes, ‘DNA’ for anything other than the original definition. Same with ‘organic’, blah blah is an organic solution to our problem internal scream
I agree with all of these suggestions but I guess I need to cut back on “no worries “, I didn’t know it had been overused.
Irregardless - it’s just plan old regardless.
“reticent” in place of “reluctant”
“plethora”
“between you and I,” use of “I” as an object
“myself” instead of “me”
“the both of you”
mixing up their/there/they’re, its/it’s, your/you’re
apostrophes thrown in on every plural
