What phrases or things are like nails on a blackboard to you?

“Usage” instead of “use.”

“utilize” instead of “use”

Plastic bags. Anywhere, but especially in my house. I try to be tolerant of more clutter than I want, but the sight of a plastic bag sets me off. Ugly, now and forever.

Reimagined is the worst! Everywhere you go you see it…

" people calling universities “uni”"

Same for people calling California “Cali.” Makes me shudder every time I see or hear it. And now even a few Californians have started to say it, although I assume they recently moved here from somewhere else.

Another bad one is saying “No problem” instead of “You’re welcome.” Although it’s getting to be so common that I’m halfway getting used to it.

Isn’t “uni” British slang?

I HATE calling someplace and spending way too long punching numbers trying to get to a live person. Even worse when the live person says they need to connect me to someone else. It just shouldn’t be that hard

“Disrupt” – I’m so tired of the idea that tearing something down is the current way to effect change. (and yes, I spelled 'effect" correctly.).

Saying “shared with me’ instead of “said,” as in, “Jen shared with me that they are thinking of getting a dog.” Jen told me… or Jen said… would be fine.

I always think of “shared with me” to be more of private conversation.

What irks me is hearing the “phrase of the year”. Remember when everyone said “engaged”? Last couple years it’s been “to your point”.

Kiddo or kiddoes. Just “kids” is fine!

“Diversity” ?

Wheelhouse

“Another bad one is saying “No problem” instead of “You’re welcome.” Although it’s getting to be so common that I’m halfway getting used to it.”

I like no problem when the thank you is in a non business transaction or for something that you are not entitled to as a paying customer but they do for you anyway. I’m not a big fan of “ You’re Welcome”. My own personal response to a thank you is “My pleasure” in most instances.

Ending a sentence with the word “right”. As in, “I know, right” Ugggg

The expression “just sayin’” drives me nuts.

I second “irregardless” , “could care less” , “kiddos”, and “diversity”

I also can’t stand the word “unconscionable”. I tune out whenever someone uses it.

A lot of these objectionable words and phrases are business jargon or fads. What is it about business that makes people want to fall into bad or irritating English? Is it due to the rise of the business management book business that coins or spreads these terms?

Yes and so much of that business jargon is sports related.

OK, we’ll huddle up on that after you’ve had a chance to run the bases since the ball is in their court.

GAH.

“Nuke-u-lar”

READ THE WORD PEOPLE.

Nuclear.

Nu-cle-ar.

“To be honest”, or even worse, “To be perfectly honest”. Does that mean if you do not preface everything you say with this phrase, you are being dishonest?
