What Plays have you seen again?

mythmom’s post in the rereading books section made me think about the Shakespeare plays I’ve seen and what fun it is to see different versions. They change even more than rereading books. My favorite play of all time is Twelfth Night and I’ve seen it in many different version. My favorite was the first at the Folger Shakespeare Theater in the early 70s. It might even have been their first production. It had lyrics set to music by Bill Danoff who went on to write the music for “Country Roads”. Both Viola and Sebastian were played by the same man.

I also saw a great production in 1978 with Vanessa Redgrave as Viola.

I’ve also seen it outdoors at Boscobel and at least once via Netflix (not a great version).

Other Shakespeare I’ve seen multiple times Macbeth (loved Patrick Stewart as Macbeth), Much Ado about Nothing (never seen a bad production), Henry V (only in the movies).

Oh and I was lucky enough to see Peter Brooks version of Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Kennedy Center in 72 or 73. It was in a white box with trapezes, very simple costumes and almost no props.

mathmom -

Off topic, but have you seen Chimes at Midnight, Orson Welles’ compilation of all the Falstaff pieces into a single story? If not, then from one Shakespeare lover to another, I heartily recommend it.

I’ve seen Othello twice (once with Paul Scofield). This is trivial, but I was fascinated with how the different plays decide where to hide the sword he uses at the end.

Saw Lear twice, but unfortunately both the Peter Ustinov version, (in two different years), didn’t think it did it justice. (It’s my favorite S play.)

Saw Twelfth Night once in Statford (CAN.), was very good.

The version of Midsummers Night Dream I saw was an undergraduate one at my first college. One of the leads later went on to be a Broadway star (unfortunately, we both transfered away and I lost touch, though we’d been pretty good friends at the time.)

I’ve seen Fool for Love ( Sam Shepard), various productions through schools and community theatre- a favorite at the Intiman was Lackawanna Blues.[Talkin’ Broadway Regional News & Reviews - Seattle: "Lackawanna Blues - 7/3/02](http://talkingbroadway.org/regional/seattle/se88.html)

I have also seen lots of Shakespeare through our season tickets to the Childrens theatre which makes great use of the regions talented performers.
Romeo and Juliet was a favorite, although I will never forget D’s retelling of her experience when they went to Ashland festival in 8th grade and Romeo and Juliet was on the menu with modern props.
Her best friend was not familiar with the story and all and was shocked , when a gunshot rang out. * She dies?*
She was heartbroken. :(

Godspell. Professional and amateur productions, whatever. Always different and entertaining.

Saw American Buffalo with John Leguizamo, Cedric the Entertainer and Haley Joel Osment…
The 39 Steps, was to be w/Sam Robards but he was replaced by the understudy that day. :(

Have seen many & enjoyed musicals whenever they appear. Also see operas repeatedly, loving the lighter, comic ones especially.

Love the songs of Rogers & Hammerstein, Rogers & Hart. The newer musicals generally don’t move me as much, tho do like Andrew Lloyd Weber.

I never pass up the opportunity to see Les Miz, it is my all time favorite.

Have seen so many plays more than once, I’m sure I can’t name them all. For Shakespeare, let’s see - Macbeth, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, The Tempest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Cymbeline, King Lear, All’s Well That End’s Well, The Taming of the Shrew, Love’s Labor’s Lost.

Others seen multiple times: Take Me Out, I Am My Own Wife, Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, South Pacific, Ragtime, Cabaret, Hair, Jersey Boys, Spring Awakening, Elegies, A New Brain, A Man of No Importance, Hairspray, A Chorus Line, Avenue Q, The Drowsy Chaperone, AIDA, Guys & Dolls, Billy Elliot, The Producers, The Lion King, Cyrano de Bergerac, The Sound of Music, Wicked, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Anything Goes, Grease, Footloose, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Chicago, Miss Saigon, tick tick Boom, Songs for a New World, Legally Blonde, Oklahoma, Waiting for Godot, Our Town, The Fantasticks, Oliver, and then there’s Rent, which I’ve seen probably 50+ times.

Those are the ones I can think of offhand. We see a lot of theatre. :)

Not a play I have seen many times, but a play I wish I could see whenever I wanted to. Arcadia, by Tom Stoppard. Why is it so easy to watch a movie over and over again and not a play. Ahh… well. I guess that is theater!

^I loved Arcadia and would be happy to see it again. I wish more plays got made into movies. They did do it to Proof which reminded me a bit of Arcadia. (At least the math theme.)

I live in near NYC and two of my annual pleasures are the
Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival and the Roundabout
Theater (the former is an outdoor theater- like Tanglewood-
Mathmom refers to it as Boscobel, and the latter is a Broadway subscription series)
in case anyone who is nearby and doesn’t know
about these sources of classic, affordable, theater.

Midsummer Nights Dream several times including twice with younger S. It’s my favorite Shakespeare play.

I’ve seen several other Shakespeare plays more than once, but I don’t remember which ones.

Mother Courage twice including with Meryl Streep for free in NY’s Central Park.
