What qualifies as a permanent address for FAFSA?

If you’re a U.S citizen that lives abroad (for work purposes) and only currently reside in said city for work purposes. What would you put down as your permanent address? My dad is close to retiring age (age of 60 where my dad works) and therefore will need to return to the US in around 3-4 years time so our current address won’t qualify as our permanent address - what will?

The address where you live is considered your “permanent address”. It is OK if you have a different one every year because your family moves.

A “temporary address” would be a summer vacation home or your address at college during the school year.

Where do you live now should be your permanent address; until you moved.

If you are an undergraduate college student or high school student, your permanent address is the place where your parents reside…usually it is the place where you reside as well (exception would be for boarding school students…their permanent address is where their parents reside…not the address of the boarding school).

If your parents reside abroad, their address is YOUR permanent address.

Pink…it doesn’t matter how old your parent is. It doesn’t matter that they once lived elsewhere. The address where you and your parents reside NOW is YOUR permanent address. In your case, it happens to be in another country.

When your parents return to the U.S. In 3-4 years, you will have a new permanent address…unless they do so after you are age 24. At that age, you can establish your own state of residency following the state guidelines to do so…independent of your parents.

That is your permanent address. They don’t mean it literally. After all, many people move many times in their lives. They mean what is your official current address. Right now, your parents’ official current address is where they live. They have no other current address.

Your parents moved for work purposes. That doesn’t mean that that isn’t their official address.

We moved from Calif to Alabama “for work purposes”. But Alabama is our current official address…even if we have plans to move back to Calif at some later time. That would NOT make Calif our permanent address right now. If and when we did move back, then that would become our permanent address…until we moved again. ;)

Same here. I moved to CT because of a job. My permanent address is where I reside in CT. It is NOT my previous address in New Hampshire. Even if I intended to move back to NH, my current CT address is my permanent address NOW. It’s where I live.

Your permanent address is the address where you and your parents currently reside. Not your previous address…and not some possible future address.
