I’m planning on rushing next year. What would be some good questions to ask a fraternity before deciding on pledging one?

How much is the yearly dues?

Do you guys HAZE?

Seriously, though, ask other people of other frats if the frat you’re rushing hazes. You will get a better experience from the ones that treat you with some kind of respect! Don’t let them treat you like dirt!

if they’re gonna bro rape you as part of the initiation ceremonies D:

Actually, I believe that a fraternity that doesn’t haze isn’t worth joining. I think there IS a worthwhile collective experience to be had from hazing. If you’re going for the frat experience, you might as well go all in, rather than join some milquetoast wannabe organization. If the idea of binge drinking and homoeroticism masquerading as machohood turns you off, then don’t join a frat.

Two of my sons have belonged to fraternities. One important piece of advice they give is to pay attention to the others who will be in your pledge class…they are the ones who will be your closest friends. It’s nice to really like the older brothers as well, but remember they will be moving on.

How much are dues?

Not only ask if they haze, but what is their idea of hazing someone?

What are the benefits for me?

How much will pledging take up of my time? See if you can ask what kind of things they do when you pledge/ask about peoples’ pledging experiences.

Those are the main ones I can think of.

How much are dues is the most important for people.

Is it mandatory to live in house? If so, for how long?

^ How much does it cost to live in house?

How much is social going to cost each semester/annual?

Do they haze? (Some houses will haze but will say they don’t, so keep that in mind)

How close are older brothers(alumni) to the newer brothers(current)?

How long is pledgeship?

Is the house into athletics?

How many functions do you have in a week?

I’m pretty sure there are houses that will give you an “info session” during Rush which will cover everything. For my house, we had an info. session a few days before Bid Night where we gave the rushees an info. session of everything from pledgeship, athletics, academics, etc.

Is there any way of really checking out what the pledge experience wil be beforehand? Is there any honest place to go to find out about hazing at certain frats? Is there any national consistency in the frats or are they really all that different on each campus?

Pastajoe, your questions no offense are quite terrible to ask. There is no way of really checking out what the pledge experience would be beforehand except for the whole studying of the fraternity history part. For other stuff like activities the pledges do with the brothers to hell week, you can’t experience that beforehand… I doubt they’d also tell you much depending on the chapter. Most houses keep secret to their hazing and most people say rumors of other houses so you never know it’s true. The most popular “hazing” you’d see that gets caught are the fun ones such as Big Sis Night. Theres never a consistency nationally since every chapter had a different way they started. The way the houses started is part of the chapter’s history which is kept on forever.

If you wanna get a feel for the different fraternities on your campus online try a website called collegeacb.com. It is very trashy/gossipy and everything you read there needs to be taken with a grain of salt but it is very greek focused and basically gives the stereotypes of all the fraternities and sororities for each campus.

thank you Fratstar. I know that all info that I will hear is rumor but I still feel that it would be of some help. I will check it out.

Don’t always ask people in other greek orgs the reputation of the group you’re interested in. A good family friend of mine is in one of the rival fraternities of the one I plan on joining and he was telling me all kinds of outrageous things (think ookie cookie) they supposedly had to do during pledging, and when I brought this up with the brothers they just started laughing and were like look, we’re known to haze the hardest we won’t lie, but come on really? Just saying, take what other’s opinions with a grain of salt for the most part.

Definitely ask for a realistic estimate of how much time pledging will take up.

Fratstar,

Thank you so much for that website. Through reading through all the trashy gossip, I can disidentify with things now that I couldn’t have before. wow im speechless. thank you so much

Much love

haha i went through the collegeACB site for Clemson and all the gossip was hilarious since I actually know half of the freshman class
