I’m starting some applications over the summer for fall 2008.

Brown is my dream school and my sister went there which I suppose helps… but I’m wondering if I have a chance. I’d also like to know if there are any other schools you all might recommend. These are my stats:

SAT: 2100. Need to improve my writing score.
AP courses (total, including the ones I’m taking senior year): 8
4 years of foreign language (spanish), 4 years of English, 4 years social science, 4 years math, 4 years lab science.
Scored a 5 on the US History AP, 4s on Micro and Macro Econ.
Taken all honors classes offered by high school.
No sports which is a problem, but President and Founder of the high school Red Cross Club.
NHS and Spanish Honors Society.
Lots and lots of hands-on volunteer experience in India and at home. (Easily 300-400 hours)
SAT Subject Tests: Chem (690… that’s pretty bad) … still have to take US History and Math II.
Very into music and classical literature, play piano, read books such as Boccaccio Homer and Dante, etc
No merit scholarships or awards of that kind :-(

Intended majors: Classics, economics, or marketing

Preferred location: Northeast, Chicago, or California.

No nice way to say this, so I just gonna say it. Your stats are insane. Loads of others (mainly asians) will be just as good, if not higher. Scores like yours have become the “standard” of non-Americans, making you “average” in that respect. You probably will get in, but keep the above in mind.

For example, I know this one Chinese girl who took 14 AP exams this year alone, is in EVERY after school activity, and took 7 AP classes. She is probably on Ridlin because she never looks tired, but that is who you are competing against.

What’s your GPA?

Anyway, it looks like you have a chance, but there is no garentee.

As for other schools, what is it that you like about Brown? Do you like Universities or LACs? More quirky or less?

I liked Brown a LOT (it was my second choice), and these are some of the other schools I liked (at a range of selectivites): Wesleyan U (my first choice and where I go), Pomona, Carelton, Vassar, Oberlin, Reed, Occidental, Skidmore, Barnard (if you’re a girl).

Some other schools that you might want to check out (ie. other schools that people I know who liked Brown also applied to). A range of selectivity, but mainly reach-y and high match type schools:

Unis: Stanford, Yale, Tufts, Northwestern, U Chicago, NYU, UC Berkley
LACs: Amherst, Swarthmore, Bowdoin, Haverford, Claremont McKenna, Middlebury, Colorado College, Connecticut College, Kalamazoo, Sarah Lawrence, Bard

You sound so Chicago it’s delicious, especially in your intended majors and your overall resume shows that you have an academic bent. Your SAT scores and AP tests certainly put you in the range of serious consideration.

I think that Brown and Chicago make strange bedfellows-- both schools have a strong, quirky student body, and both schools value academics and learning for the sake of learning. The primary difference is that Brown’s approach is country club, while Chicago’s approach is boot camp. (At Brown, the idea is that you challenge yourself as much as you want to be challenged in the ways that you want to be challenged, and at Chicago, the challenge is imposed on you from outside).

Both schools are extremely self-selective; both schools are great for some students and terrible for others. Both are definitely worth looking into.

How can anyone make predictions here without knowing GPA or class rank?
