What school should I go to?

I want to go to a school in Florida, so that I can still be close to my family and come home whenever I want to. Also, I want to stay in FL so that I can keep the scholarships.

However, I can not seem to find that “perfect” school for me. I want to either major in Information Technology or Accounting-- I am working on a decision. When I look up a school and get comfortable with it, there is always something that draws me away from it that makes me not so comfortable with it anymore.

Please give your opinions on some good schools in FL.

EDIT: Also, I am not big on the whole school spirit, college life. There are many big universities in FL that focus mainly on sports, and that is a down for me. I am into being independent, finding ones own way, and learning in ones major. Since I am originally from NY I was thinking about NYU, because it has that feel that I am looking for. But, there is the fall of being so far away from my family and the huge price tag on an NYU education. Also, I think I might be a little lost in such a big city. Is there a school in FL that has the feel I am looking for?

bump ^^^^^

Have you looked at Flagler College? Small school, not expensive, great location, and not huge athletics–they don’t have a football team, which is the team that usually provides the most school spirit.

I know about Flagler because I looked at it for a different major, but from everyone I’ve talked to and things I’ve read, just about every option at Flagler is excellent, with small classes, personal attention, etc.

I don’t know much about Florida schools. I would, however, advise you against going to a certain college just because it’s near home. If you feel like NYU is your true calling, by all means look into it. Don’t let your college search be limited to colleges in Florida - look for schools with the best fit for you instead.

Look at New College of Florida. It seems to fit your criteria pretty well.

The problem with Flagler College is that you’ll lose a lot of the benefit that the Bright Futures Scholarship provides since it’s not a state school.

You’ll get the full benefit of Bright Futures at New College of Florida, but a lot of people (including Floridians) have never heard of it or dismiss it immediately because of the goofy name. NCF has good placement for business/law/medicine school though since the college doesn’t give grades. (Professors give written evaluations so graduate schools don’t have to try to figure out whether the GPA was inflated or not).

I wouldn’t really recommend NYU for undergraduate since they’re so screwy with financial aid and it does sound like you would have demonstrated need if you went there.

A few Schools that have not been mentioned and are worth mentioning:

Rollins College: Winter Haven, Fl/Orlando, FL

Stetson University: Orlando, FL

University of Tampa

Ill mention UMiami because although it is considered to have the heavy sports scene, its still in a large city and has many other things to do other than following the sports scene and frat scene.

Yeah, you’ll need a state school to keep Bright Futures, so you’re limited to UF, NCF, UCF, FSU, USF.

NCF is very different from the rest. UF, FSU, and UCF are all going to have a lot of school spirit. USF has less, but people still care about sports.

NCF fits probably everything, but doesn’t have anything related to your major(s).

I actually think USF would be the best fit for you judging from what you’ve said.

Thank you for your replies. One of my major concerns is being able to keep Bright Futures so I am very limited.
Also, I agree about NCF, the name is odd, and not many schools or businesses in FL have heard of it.

UCF was my main choice for a while, but I recently got discouraged by their housing and the limited areas that have wireless internet. It is the closest to my home and also it is not as huge and sports are not emphasized as much as at UF, so it is still an option.

I am just looking for that “perfect” match.

Florida State, in Tallahassee, isn’t exactly Starkville or Athens. Life doesn’t have to revolve around tailgating and greek life.

I think UCF and USF would be your best fits.

“Florida State, in Tallahassee, isn’t exactly Starkville or Athens. Life doesn’t have to revolve around tailgating and greek life.”

In my biased opinion, Tallahassee is great college town. It’s one of those hybrid college town/state capital cities. It’s probably comparable to an Austin (UT), Baton Rouge (LSU), or a Madison (UW). All those places have a major university dominating the social scene but they’re also a state capital. The university is a major part of the city but life doesn’t completely revolve around it.
