What school was unexpectedly your least favorite when you visited?

Scrotie. http://theballreport.com/the-story-of-scrotie-the-college-sports-mascot-who-was-a-dick-and-balls/

My niece has a t shirt that says ā€œGo hard big Dickā€ from Dickenson.

Nope.

Sorry (not sorry) to continue the mascot discussion, I have to throw in the University of Hawaii Rainbows (or 'Bows) as perhaps the least terrifying ā€œmascot.ā€ I was told that the logo – which included a rainbow, of course – was changed in 2000, supposedly because the football team got flak at away games for wearing helmets with rainbows. Who knows if this is true. I do remember cheering ā€œGo 'Bows!ā€ at games many many moons ago. Not sure what the cheer is now.

So glad we crossed Dickinson off our list @cleoforshort!!

emerson. dorms were small and all the classrooms were cold and grey and very modern/minimalist. little social space as well.

@scoop85 Touchtown, the LIVE Bear is history. No bears since 1939. It seems pretty red at Cornell, I was there twice in the last year. There is this guy in a RED suit who runs around at soccer games even! No bear at the soccer games at Cornell. Here in Colorado we literally bring a live buffalo onto a football field. named Ralphie, OK its pretty darn western, and animal cruel and all.

For those that want macho animal mascots, U of Colorado cannot be beat ! There is an athletic sport out
here, to handle the live buffalo! Not sure how long this will last —

Its hard for me to believe that our most athletic students at CU Boulder (besides Girls basketball, go BUFFS!)
are these athletes that run a live BUFFALO around a field.,. My kids
skipped this for New York State values !!! Go RED!!!

I find this rather revolting. It never gets mentioned in the literature about
Boulder does it? !!! Entire history of the handling of female Buffalos, I think it harkens to our rodeo traditions.

Now I will get hate mail from CU fans…

@Coloradomama – I hadn’t known about the story about the live Touchdown until the statue was unveiled for Homecoming weekend and the sesquicentennial in 2015. The statue is a lot smaller than I had expected.

Students ā€˜audition’ for the job of wearing the bear costume. They walk around Ho Plaza (the open area between the Campus Store & The Straight) interacting with students. Apparently it is a sought-after position!

@CT1417 would our kids rather dress like a bear or run with a live buffalo?!! Gotta do something in all their spare time in college. ! And did I mention the yellow jacket giant insect costume and gold Model T at GaTech yet? But GaTech has the number 1 fight song, so they redeem themselves in my eyes. I love the history of mascots and its totally a reason to just say no (or yes ) to any school !! I mean find your values in the mascot ! I once posted a photo of a GaTech game, and someone asked me if the mascot belonged to Donald Trump! It was an eye opener about gold colored cars!!!

Pitzer College. Saw almost no students, rooms were very dark and small, and there just wasn’t much going on

Wesleyan. The campus is nice enough, though we are in state and know Middletown–we are not fans. But the activism was so over the top as to be offensive. Flyers everywhere dropping the F bomb, messages written in chalk all over campus, student groups protesting. The tour guide was boorish and didn’t represent the school in a positive way. I consider myself pretty liberal socially, but it was just.too.much. We toured almost all the NESCAC schools and none left us with the same impression.

Oh no, chalk messages!? The horror!

For DS18, it was Harvey Mudd. We visited close to 8 schools during his search, and Mudd was the least impressive. The tour was dull. The guide’s answers lacked enthusiasm, and ā€œI don’t know,ā€ was a frequent response. The guide didn’t seem to be sold on the product he was selling. DS did not apply.

@taverngirl We are also in state. Wes is a joke, it’s almost as if the kids there think there is a prize at the end of four years for being the most offensive activist.

My D14 knows some kids that attend and judging by their FB posts Wes brought out the worst in them.

So interesting about Wes. I’m a liberal but am down on liberal or conservative thought bubbles for college for my kids. Not what they or our society needs.

ā€œa prize at the end of four yearsā€

Ah, the Woke-lympics. Many compete, yet no one gets a medal.

In the age of widespread voter apathy, I’d much prefer a student body which is actively engaged in issues than not. Different strokes…

Yes, engage, but don’t protest to keep a speaker from coming to campus. Listen and engage that speaker with whom you disagree – ask questions and debate them on the merit of the issues and, when needed, call them out based on well-informed opinions. I don’t like activism that reflects an interest in being loud without being rooted in the issues. Not saying all campus activism comes from that place – but when it does it’s more self-expression than anything – I identify as ā€œxā€ so I’m supposed to go yell and chant ā€œy.ā€ Especially if it’s a protest that shuts down dialogue by banning controversial speakers. That can be really lazy. (Though I’d draw the line against actual Nazis like Richard Spencer and such – they don’t deserve any air time.) Not saying this is Wes; I don’t know the college. Okay, dismounting from soap box now.

Protests discourage conversing with alternative viewpoints and until we can talk about any issue intelligently how can we possibly solve anything? My son is at a campus that he loves except he doesn’t feel comfortable wearing his political t-shirts. That’s sad.

Wes students are very intelligent. I’m sure they can and do converse intelligently on the topics they protest. I’m sure they understand the issues even though they might take a different side than some others.
