your SAT is out of this world for the best schools… your weighted GPA is also awesome; yet, your UW and EC’s present big problems; you seem to have a pretty rigorous schedule

You’ve got stats–a 2220 SAT score as an URM–that are more than good enough for HYPS. However a 3.0 UW at a public school in South Carolina is a major concern, though I suppose strong mid-year grades may be able to remedy this somewhat. The subject of your essay could also make or break you; it will work out if your experiences are unique and inspiring, but otherwise it won’t really stand out because a lot of kids will write about the very same topic you have chosen.

Ouch! Your GPA and class rank will certainly hurt unless you have some compelling reason to explain them (e.g., illness, family sickness, or something similar). EC’s aren’t great either. You should be writing excellent essays to help counterbalance the weak aspects of your application.

I’d look below the Ivies. They will be high reaches for you despite your URM status and good (they aren’t out-of-this-world, as someone suggested, but are very strong–Congrats!) scores. I second the “What are you looking for in a school?” question. That will help us narrow it down.

I’m planning to major in either biomedical engineering or math but I hardly think these are final plans. And yes I do have an upward trending gpa I’ve made straight A’s so far this year and should continue too. My essays should explain why my grades were so lackluster before.
