I have read that there are at least a few colleges that have self scheduled finals, helping students to ease the stress of finals by scheduling the date/time of the tests themselves. Is this only available in a very few colleges? Something new that might be a growing trend?
What colleges do this?

Only ones I know of specifically are Bryn Mawr and Haverford. Had self-scheduled exams back when I graduated from BMC in the early '80s. There were 3 exam slots every day during exam period, and you signed up for which day, which slot, you would take each exam on – so they could have the right exams in the right rooms at the right time. Was a wonderful relief then, as you could space them out based on your assessment of your needs. With exam software, I imagine there could be more flexibility.

BMC and Haverford had/have vibrant Honor Code which supported the student culture of independence and accountability required for self-scheduled exams. I would be interested to know what other schools may be implementing self-scheduled exams and the context of the school culture.

Looking at my son’s freshman year exam schedule, with 2 intensive exams on the first two days, then nothing but a paper for 3 days – he sure would have appreciated being able to space those first two out.

And since I am procrastinating today – a google search on self-scheduled exams suggest that a number of LACs have them, including Carleton, Williams etc.

The highest ranked school that does this is Caltech.

However, it does not appear to be a growing trend.

Wellesley has self-scheduled exams.

I believe both Harvey Mudd and Washington and Lee offer this option.

Connecticut College

I’m guessing a correlation would exist between where honor codes are a big deal and the presence of self-schedled exams.

I think Davidson has it-not sure.

Davidson does have them.

This would be on the list of things to consider in college selection. It certainly wouldn’t be a deciding factor on its own, but it seems like things like this point to a school that is perhaps more focused on creating systems/policies with the students best interests in mind.
