I’m a junior and I want to go into either interior design or interior architecture. I had a really bad freshman year but I do a lot of volunteer work and I have job. My mom didn’t go to college and she doesn’t know much about the different schools so I have NO IDEA what I am doing.

Cummulative GPA: 3.0
Current GPA: 3.3

I don’t know what else I am supposed to put.

I took the PSATs last year and got:
Reading-55
Math-56
Writing-52

I have no idea what those scores mean so if someone wants to explain those too that would be really great.

But my main question is; what schools should I be looking at? anywhere on the east coast is fine, your answer can be general if you want.

thank you so much in advanced.

One of the things you should think about is whether you want more of a traditional university/college or an art school. Most schools that offer interior design will be art schools, however, it is certainly possible to find traditional universities/colleges that offer interior design as a major.

As for your comment about not understanding how the PSAT scores work… they’re supposed to predict how you’d do on the SAT (however, this is often not the case). Basically, to see what you would have theoretically gotten on the SAT, add a 0 to the end of each score (R: 550, M: 560, W: 520). This would be a cumulative SAT score of 1630 out of the possible 2400.

At this point, rather than me recommending you schools to look at (because I’m not very well-versed in art schools), I would recommend that you go onto collegeboard.com and do a college match maker search to see what schools your interests and scores line up with. Once that program generates a list, start looking at the schools by going to their websites and seeing what sorts of programs are offered that you’re interested in. From that, you should be able to get a general sense of what’s out there and what your options are.

Check out Design Intelligence. They rank each of the interior design programs in the country and break them down by region. The top three on the east coast in 2007 were Cornell, Syracuse and Pratt Institute. Depending on how your SATs come out, your current GPA may not get you into Cornell or Syracuse. I don’t know much about Pratt. My daughter has been accepted to interior design programs at Phila U, Drexel, Cinci and Kansas State and is trying to decide. University of Cincinnati has had the number one ranked interior design program in the country for the past 10 years although I think for 2009 Kansas State is ranked #1 and Cinci is ranked #2. Also on the east coast is Philadelphia University which has lower GPA/SAT scores than others but a decent interior design program that you take the same classes as the architects for the first year. Drexel also has a ranked interior design program with the benefit of co-ops like at Cinci. Her GPA is 3.65 and ACT 27 (Midwest schools tend to look at ACT). She only took SAT once and had a 580 reading, 570 math and 630 writing. I agree with comment below - go onto collegeboard.com and start a profile and search for schools with interior design or interior architecture as a major and locations you are interested in. Just make sure that they are accredited programs. You will want to get your applications in early, some programs fill up fast (like Cincinnati). Good luck!
