What schools should I look at? NJ Resident, 92 UW GPA, 1280 SA, undecided major, maybe public health or political science

Most definitely not :sob:
But I’ll do the other stuff

Literally me saying ā€œokayā€ sets her off so :sob:

I’ll figure it out

Not sure about HBCU.

As for why being full-pay at most colleges is an advantage, it’s because colleges are businesses and need the revenue that tuition brings. So at a need-aware college, they look at (or might look at) whether or not an applicant has indicated they want to be considered for need-based financial aid. And then they might take that into consideration when making offers of admission— especially between two relatively equal candidates.

Note that many colleges will not outright say that they are need-aware, but I believe that the general consensus is that many are, at least in part. Or perhaps only when trying to fill the last few members of the incoming class.

This is the opposite of need-blind colleges, where admissions offices do not know the financial aid status of the applicant at all. Note that being need blind does not mean that they will meet full-need.

I searched up need aware schools and some of the things on my list like Smith college are need aware.

But if I’m not going to get much anyway would it really make a difference?

My understanding is that need aware schools look at the amount of aid you will need to attend…when reviewing your application for admission. So…if you don’t have financial need, this might not matter for you at all.

The point is that checking the box that says you don’t need aid may help you at need-aware schools.

Wait so that means 0 aid altogether? :sob:

Like not even merit?

You need to reach out to each college to see if they require the FAFSA for merit scholarships.
In addition, all students are entitled to a 5.5k loan for freshman year and many universities ā€œpackageā€ the loan so you’d end up 5.5k short if you don’t apply.

If you check that you won’t apply for financial aid, need aware schools will consider you in a different pile but you must know whether that’ll impact consideration for merit aid.

You’ll need to fill out FAFSA even if just for the 5.5k loan.

Okay Tysm.

I wanna ask you abt scripps but ur profile is hidden :sob:. Can you pm me?

Keep in mind, to receive merit you should apply to schools that your stats make you a top student there, a less selective school. Matches are much harder to get merit, reaches impossible at many, most.

Wait so what school would deem me merit. UMD? UPITT (I’m technically in state? I think it’s my dads primary residence) Asheville, Rhodes, Hofstra (ive heard her say smth positive abt this school once), Agnes Scott, Clark Atlantic, Rhode Island, UNC greenseboro, Oglethorpe, Georgia state

If any of this aren’t safeties let me know

Also I have family that’s faculty at the university of Georgia I think. Does that do anything?

UMD is not a safety school and I would not count on any merit. UGA is not a safety school either.

Are the others fine?

I didn’t intend to say UGA was a safety I was asking abt potential faculty connection.

Is Georgia state or no?

I believe Hofstra would be a likely school for you. I cannot speak about merit (don’t know).

Even if I EA?

To where?

I believe URI is a safety. I am not sure what they offer in merit.

To Hofstra. I plan to EA to a lot of these

Take a look at the website.

How would that determine whether or not it’s a safety I’m confused :sob:
