What should entering freshmen have to do before joining?

I’m an entering freshmen and I have received very few emails from Columbia regarding what I should be doing.

So far I have:

Paid the deposit
Filled housing form
Received an Academic Planning Guide and decided the courses I should take
Requested high school to send final transcript to Columbia

What I’m waiting to hear about:

Room allocation
Immunization requirements
Tuition/boarding

Can any current students/entering freshmen who know what’s happening tell me what else I’m supposed to be doing?

Thanks

Go to one of Columbia’s Summer Advising Sessions. That is an opportunity for you to meet in person with several of the Deans…There are presentations, panel discussions…At the end, Columbia College students are gifted with their copy of the Illiad by a Columbia alum, through a kind of passing of the intellectual torch. Columbia Engineering students get their own special book at the “closing ceremony.” You need to check which one is in your region, and when. We just came back from the Midwest regional held in Chicago. It wasn’t that convenient for us (having a nine hour drive), but we left feeling that it was absolutely worth the trip.

There ARE sessions for internationals held in England, on the continent, and in various Asian countries. Also in India, I believe. Check with Columbia on that.

Beyond that, you need to contact Columbia and start making your OWN inquiries – kind of like an adult – and not asking anonymous posters on CC!! The school will not hold your hand. Take initiative and contact the actual institution for the most reliable, appropriate information.

You should have received this email already:

***LATE-JUNE: Be on the lookout for three important communications.

You will receive a “Financing Options” email from our office detailing information about monthly payment plans, student loans, parent loans, etc. There are no immediate deadlines; however, we strongly recommend that you finalize your financing plans before the Fall semester begins.

You will be emailed an Outside Scholarship Notification Form by Xinhan-Jane Zhang, our Special Projects Coordinator. Our requested deadline is July 25, 2012.

You will be receiving information from Columbia Health Services

EARLY AUGUST: You will receive your first Columbia STUDENT ACCOUNT STATEMENT (aka E-Bill) via email at your Columbia Email Account in the middle of AUGUST 2012. Your E-Bill will include Fall 2012 charges and anticipated Fall 2012 financial aid. The Spring E-Bill is sent in December 2012. We will email you a list of “Frequently Asked Billing Questions” to help you understand your first statement and payment responsibilities.

Please watch your Columbia email account over the summer and throughout the school year for important messages from our office. We will remind you of upcoming deadlines, notify you when we’ll be available for appointments, and send you notifications about your account status. We will email you information about our OFFICE HOURS and about the option of scheduling an appointment with your advisor as the new school year begins.

as for room allocation, you should receive an email in August regarding your room assignment and roommate.

[Health Services: MMR](http://health.columbia.edu/about/immunization-requirements/mmr)
^this is all the information you need regarding immunization procedure. I contacted CU health services via phone and they informed me that incoming students must fill in the Columbia University MMR Form, which can be found in the link provided above. In addition it is advisable to fax them a copy of your immunization record.

Hope this was helpful!

Thank you. That was extremely helpful.

sd2cu

Could you please confirm to which email id that email is sent - columbia id or the personal id of the students?

Incoming students - have you all received that email already?

thank you

^ I didn’t get that email too. I will hazard a guess that I didn’t receive it because I didn’t apply for financial aid and the email is purely concerning finances.

The most recent email I received from Columbia was regarding the ISOP.

actprep

^ did you get that email to your columbia email id or to the personal email id? Have students started getting emails to the columbia id already?

regarding ISOP email - did you enroll for the ISOP program and hence the email? because some of them did not get that ISOP email as well. When was it sent and what was it about?

I registered for ISOP in the beginning of the month and got a confirmation yesterday. I’ve received maybe 6 mails to my Columbia address so far. They don’t seem to be using the email address you used during admissions any more.

Edit:
If you are not receiving any email at your Columbia ID, you’re probably using CubMail. There are two fixes to this:

1) Automatically forward all your mail to a gmail account HugeDomains.com;
2) Use Lion Mail http://lionmail.columbia.edu (Gmail based)

Thanks for starting this very useful thread actprep54.

Are the 6 mails generic ones that should have been received by all?
If one receives even a single Email to Columbia Email account, can those fixes (CubMail) be ignored?

For those of you who had any questions regarding final transcripts, they want you to use the Common Application to send in the final report. If your counselor already filled it up, your done.

1)Before moving in, does one have to fill the dining in dollars? What is the procedure to do so? If its been chosen already during housing finalization, would the amount be added in the upcoming fee that is expected in early August? or does one have to separately fill in the dining dollars based on the plan - what are the other incoming freshmen doing about this?

2) have other confirmed the insurance plan - is sept 30 the deadline for that? If so, how will one’s insurance be covered until then if needed (from august 27 to sept 30)

please help!

^could any one help on the above? thanks.

I would wait until the bill comes out for the first question. As for the second, it appears as though you are not covered during some of NSOP if you take the Columbia plan, but the plan will kick in on September 1.

So, have others confirmed the insurance plan already or do we wait until September to submit it online?

I don’t really understand your question. I waived the Columbia insurance by sending in a form. You have to do this by September 30 or they will automatically sign you up. The Columbia plan takes effect on September 1 if you sign up before school starts/during NSOP.

^ thanks. what do you mean by “they automatically sign you up”. So do the students not need to sign up online if they want basic plan?

No, cause then you will not be covered until September 30. If you want the basic plan you should sign up now.
