What should I be doing with my time?

I’m a current freshman at the University of Miami. I had previous offers at Rice University and Northwestern, but turned them down because of a full scholarship here.
I applied as a high school senior to other schools including Harvard, Yale, as well as several other Ivy leagues. I was waitlisted by Harvard and Yale, and rejected by Princeton, Columbia, and Brown.

I am unhappy at my current institution because I believe there is limited opportunity for intellectual stimulation at UM. The schools I am considering to apply to are Stanford and Penn, but mostly because I had not previously applied to them. I am also reapplying to Harvard and Yale as I was waitlisted and believe I might be given a second chance.

I was informed that one of the reasons I had not gotten into any top ten schools was because although I had plenty of achievements in high school, I simply needed to have achieved more.

My questions for CC members are:

(1) How does having applied to a school affect one’s chances of getting in the second time?
(2) In order to prepare for my transfer application, what sort of extracurriculars should I be doing? How, as a freshman, can I achieve honors or win awards?
(3) How do I convince a school that I am not interested in them solely because of their name?

However, there is one thing this article that I know isn’t true (a significant number of CC students transferring to Y), so who knows how much is really accurate.

Transfer admissions doesn’t really differ from fr admissions, there’s no set of ECs, it depends on your interests. Since you have a full scholarship at UMiami, you’re at the top of your cohort academically, that should help open up opportunities for awards, research, etc.

By telling them the truth? If you have a reason other than name, then you should be able to articulate it.
