What should I do with my gap year?

I graduated HS and I was going to hopkins as a freshman but I left for medical reasons. I may go back in the fall, but I have this year to really “find myself” and figure out if perhaps medicine is the right career path.

I am taking an EMT course and biology classes at GW right now, and I plan on shadowing a cardiologist for a week (is one week a good amount? I have never shadowed before), but otherwise I don’t know what else I could do.

I’d like to volunteer, but I want to do somethingt hat I could commit to in the long run. I don’t want to do ‘one off’ events here and there.

If anyone knows of anything I could do in the DC area (I am 18), please let know! I’d really appreciate it. I have applied to volunteer at hospitals but they are all busy/full…:(

Does anyone have any advice?..

Also, how good is St. Andrews for premed? I am comparing U of T, JHU, St. Andrews and U of Maryland. (I got into all four)

More or less every US allopathic medical schools require that you complete at least 2 years of college and all your pre-req coursework at an accedited US or Canadian college or university.

Not sure if St. Andrews would be acceptable to med schools. It’s something you need to check on.

BTW, simply having taken an EMT course will not help in med school admissions. You need to actually use your EMT by either working in a paid or volunteer position for it to be a meaningful credential.

OP, why are you posting different things in different forums? If you applied to Maryland late, then you certainly have not yet been accepted and since most all seats are allocated during priority selection, there is no guarantee that you will.

If you want advice, we must first have the facts. Hypotheticals are a waste of everyone’s time.

I’m asking what I should do with my gap yr different thread? And if I got into jhu it’s not certain ill get in to umd but its likely. How is it a waste of anybody’s time?

You could always try volunteering in a research lab? Do you plan on doing anything with your EMT certification this summer, medical schools will want to see commitment on your part from that, but it sounds like you have a lot of potential and expect a lot from yourself. Don’t let snobby CC’ers bash you.

Did you attend JHU or apply? I’m a bit confused based on your other posts.

She was there for the first semester as a freshman and left because of medical reasons? OP is this right? So if this is correct, yes she was accepted, she attended, then she left and applied to other schools and does not know whether to return.
