What should I major in and what courses should I take next year?

I am a sophmore in high school and these are the courses I’m currently taking:
Speech & Debate
PAP Alg II
Span 1
AP World History (Not taking the AP Exam)
PAP English II
Engineering Design & Presentation

I have taken Biology, Human Geography, Eng 1, and PAP Geometry as a freshman.

I want to major in something concerning the medical/engineering field and I would like a job that would make me well off living by myself. Maybe something like $70k-$90k a year. I am sorry if I sound needy. I am just very worried for the future and what my life will be like without a secure job.

Why are you not taking the AP exam?

My brother and his friends had taken it the year before. My brother got a three and the others got twos. Seeing as how only some colleges take threes, I decided it would be too hard for me and the laziness got the better of me.

Try to have at least the following by the time you graduate from high school:

  • 4 years of English
  • math through precalculus (calculus preferred if you finish precalculus by 11th grade)
  • science: all of biology, chemistry, physics
  • 3+ years of history and social studies
  • level 3+ of foreign language
  • art or music

You don’t need to select your major now - it’s far too early. You can start seriously thinking about it your senior year of high school, and then select it sometime in your freshman year of college.

UCB’s list up above this post is a good one. Don’t worry about focusing your courses to any one major or anything - just get a good college prep curriculum in there. If you are leaning towards engineering/medicine, it’s good to take calculus in high school if you can, but don’t worry if you can’t. You can take it in college. (I’d recommend four years of math regardless.)
