What should son wear for skype job interview?

College son has a skype interview for a tutoring job with an SAT prep company. I think he will be fine wearing a polo shirt, but he’s not sure. If it makes any difference, the company uses a lot of humor in its advertising, so they’re definitely not stuffy.

If I were doing the interview, I would want to see someone who dresses neatly and is well groomed. Not a Snoop Dogg shirt. Not wet hair. That’s about it.

Polo shirt would be appropriate. He will be working with young people, so need to be too dressed up.

polo is perfect. anything more would be overkill.

And no stripes or prints. They can really vibrate on camera. And a non-distracting background. Do a trial run in advance to see what the camera picks up.

^^ I was just going to add that the background should be neat and neutral, maybe a wall with a generic picture. Also think about lighting; for example, if your son’s back is to a window, the interviewer might have a hard time seeing his face.

Turn off all phone ringers, both cell and landline.

But he doesn’t have to wear pants.

If I were doing the interview, one of the first questions I’d ask would be, “Are you wearing pants?” I wouldn’t care if he was or not, but I’d want to know how he’d answer, if he’d handle that well. If he hemmed and hawed and got nervous because he wasn’t, that would be bad. If he laughed and said he was wearing shorts, that would be fine. If he said, I thought you might ask so I’m wearing pants, that would also be fine.

Blue is supposed to show up nicely on camera, which is why it is often used in photo shoots (white can be harsh & provide too much contrast). If he has a blue polo shirt he likes, he might want to wear that. Would also have him wear slacks or jeans.

And make sure the cats are not in the room with the computer. Mine love to jump on the keyboard, and it would not be good if the cats disconnected his interview!

If there are dogs around, it’s best they not be barking… that comes over surprisingly loud on speakers. (One coworker that works from home has loud dogs next door and I can hear them.)

We recently had a Skype interview with a candidate where I work.

Afterwards, the person conducting the interview said that the candidate’s focus sort of wandered during the interview.

So your son should be conscious of maintaining the right level of eye contact while skyping.

I disagree that a polo shirt is fine for an interview. I would at least wear a button up shirt and tie. A suit would be overkill though. It’s a job interview and yes, he will probably wear a polo shirt to work, however, for the interview, common practice is to dress one level above work attire so that would call for a button up and a tie. Wear pants :D.

Thank you all for the tips! Son has a lot of experience with skype (sadly, not with his parents) so is aware of some of the issues, but it’s great to be aware of the others like the pets (and the pants).
