What sized backpack should I get?

I want to get my new backpack for the school year now so I can use it during orientation too if I need it.
How much do you normally have to carry through out the day?
I’m going to be a chem major so basically how much do science majors have to carry with them.

Is this a serious question…do you really need people on this forum to tell you what kid of backpack you should get…

Whats next you want us to tell you what undies to wear?

It really depends on if you’re planning to bring books to class/study in the library or study in the dorm, but your high school backpack should be fine. If you have a laptop, a laptop sleeve, carrying case, or laptop backpack will come in handy. Personally, I felt that my backpack was a lot lighter compared to high school since there were only one to three classes a day.

By the way, they should provide you with a drawstring backpack at orientation, so I don’t think there’s really a need to bring a normal backpack. All you’ll be carrying is probably some papers you get from presentations.

thank you
Just wanted to know if bringing books was necessary. Since it’s not I can get a smaller less bulkier back pack.

Not only are you taking only 3 courses, you don’t need to bring your textbooks to lecture or discussion most of the time. >75% of my textbooks have never left my dorm room.

TBH, unless you intend to study in the library or something, you don’t need a backpack at all. You just need something to store a notebook and a pen (or your laptop). Many girls simply carry along a tote bag.

it’s not necessary, but it’s by far not uncommon.

the backpack i got, i got from ackerman; best $30 i ever spent. I mostly bought it for the water holders on the side because i wanted it to hold my water bottle, but it comes in handy for other stuff like laptop sleeves. I’ve ever stored fruit in my backpack for a few days and forget about it and eat it later (and sometimes…i don’t remember and that doesn’t turn out well; especially with bananas ><)

as said above, you don’t really need a backpack, but there are definite advantages to having a nice one. The one i bought was sketchers, but you might want to look into getting a northface.

how big are the draw string backpacks? cuz i was planning on bringing my laptop messenger bag. but if theyre already providing a bag, then maybe i should jut bring a laptop sleeve

The drawstring backpacks are pretty shoddy. I wouldn’t trust my laptop in them. -.-

If you google drawstring backpacks it’s just like any of those (except with a UCLA design), maybe on the smaller side. I don’t think it’s something you’d want to keep your laptop in.

I thought this was a really good question! I’ve been wondering the same thing myself. Considering that I’ve seen a lot of students with huge backpacks (been mostly around the dental school though, so that might be it), I wasn’t sure if my simple Jansport would be okay. Or if some kind of tote would suffice…though they tend to kill my shoulders lol

In any case, thanks for all the input, guys :D

My backpack has Dragonball Z Goku on it. It’s so cool. You should get one with a popular cartoon or people will think you’re dumb.

you should get a regular sized backpack

Get one of those suitcase-like rolling back-pack. Those are becoming trendy. They are hip and practical! When you reach the top of a hill (there are lots of hills at ucla) you can just roll it down and you don’t even gotta carry it.

Hey guys, I have a question- what type of pencil is best for class? I normally use mechanical pencils, but I feel like they might be hard to deal with during lecture. Do you recommend wooded ones instead? Also, what time should I go to bed? I hear a lot of people go to bed late but won’t that make me tired for class!!!

Sorry for all of the questions, but I’m completely incapable of forming my own opinions or doing some research. I’m just a college student after all!

Dear kwwboarder,

I would stick with mechanical pencils. I would also advise not sleeping…it’s for the weak. Working out, learning lame pick up lines, and playing WOW would be much better uses of your time. I know your just a college student, but I believe in you. You can do it!!

But the college fairy doesn’t like when people make fun of incoming freshmen’s posts. So if you don’t want him coming after you, I wouldn’t make fun of an honest question. As a famous UCLA student once said, “Thank you for listening and have a nice day.” :))

I use pens. Pencils are too faint for proper note taking. Erasing is much slower than crossing things out anyway.
