I am a junior and i have just started the college search process. I’m interested in going into a business school in the Boston area. Right now im thinking about majoring in finance or business administration/entrepreneurship. I know that summer programs/jobs are great ways to increase your worth on a college application. So what i am asking is, what is a good plan for me to follow through with during summer vacation.

I’m not really sure if i should try and look for a job because im not interested in doing the same work everyday for numerous hours. The thing i do like about a job is that i can put something about it on my application and earn money.

Next, I was also thinking about following through with an internship. The problem with this is that it would take a lot of work to get it and i don’t really have sufficient means of transportation to get from place to place. What i like about it is that I can experience what different careers are like for my future.

So lastly, im leaning a little more towards doing a summer program at a college. I would definitely enjoy creating a business plan or investing in the market as a couple projects. Staying overnight at a college would be pretty cool too for the experience.

So a couple questions i have are…
What would a good paying/enjoyable summer job?
What is a good internship i could take and how could i obtain it?
What is a good program i could do and what college(preferably local) is it at?

First, have you tried checking with your school? They should have a list of internships that students can do over the summer. Also, check job postings! For example, Bank of America, if you’re interested in finance, etc etc. But I mean technically, I guess if you’re interested in business, you COULD work at any job because it’s a business… Well haha I don’t know, but having a job and or an internship is a really great idea. Colleges loves that you’re serious about taking maturity on and thinking about your career and future. This period of time pretty much sucks because of the recession, and the lack of jobs, but if you search and ask around, I’m sure you’ll land a job. And I’m pretty sure that there’s really nothing stopping you from taking on both an internship and a job; after all, it’s summer! You have a lot of time on your hands
Also, if you have a community college around your area, you can always take college classes there, and work a job or an internship at the same time. So if you’re trying to find an internship, start emailing companies you want to intern for or thinking about interning for. I’m not from Massachusetts so I can’t really help you there, but there’s always google
For summer programs, I don’t really know if many are open at this time, but I’m sure that the ones that are like pre college programs are still open, like Summer@Brown and Harvard SSP… if you’re willing to spend a lot; but keep in mind that community colleges have a wide assortment of classes too.

Sorry for the freakishly vague information, but I hope you decide what you want to do over the summer!
