What Texas college is right for me?

I am a Texas resident who is interested in the medical field and was wondering what Texas college is best for me?
Rank 82/625
GPA: 5.1

Test scores?
Budget?

SAT1260
Budget $ 20,000 a year

All of the Texas public universities have your sat within the 25/75 range. Unfortunately most spots are reserved for guaranteed admission for the top 10 of HS grads. Even UT Austin has COA close to your budget - about $22K. I’d apply to UT-Austin and Dallas, Texas Tech, TAMU, etc. Others are a bit less. You’ll probably want to visit. If you have one of the UT (or other) branches, you could live and home and save some money.

What do you mean by medical field? Nursing? Bio?

What area in the medical field? Nursing? There are many colleges in TX with great nursing schools that you could be accepted. Texas State and UT Arlington have great nursing programs. UT Austin is out since you are not in the top 7% and A&M College Station is a reach, because they are super competitive and enrollment is primarily auto/academic admits.
With A&M, they may offer you the Blinn Team that has admission agreements for majors, where you can transfer into your major after satisfying the requirements. http://blinnteam.tamu.edu/AdmissionAgreements.aspx
A&M Corpus Christi doesn’t have SAT or ACT minimum of you are top 25% and satisfy the HS requirements http://admissions.tamucc.edu/freshman/requirements.html
There are are just too many worthy schools in Texas to list without having a specific degree in mind.

Thelma2 gave you good advice. Your stats are not high enough for UT and A&M would be a reach. There are lots of schools you could attend but you really need to give a specific career goal than medical field. You could be talking about being a doctor, dentist, nurse, health administration etc.

Texas mom of a high school senior.

You’re auto-admit to all of the state schools, except UT Austin and A&M College Station, with your GPA/SAT scores.

The best pre-med programs are at UT Dallas and Texas Tech. With your stats the approximate costs will be;

UT Dallas - $26,000 a year for tuition, room & board, books, fees, expenses.

Texas Tech - $26,500 a year for tuition, room & board, books, fees, expenses.

The only decent state schools under the $20,000 mark (for pre-med) with your stats are;

UT Arlington $10,000 all in

University of North Texas $20,000 all in

Texas State would run you $16,000, but their science (bio/chem) department is super thin

Two other really good options you might want to consider are;

Austin College $20,000 all in (private liberal arts school in Sherman, Texas) has a strong pre-med program

Oklahoma State University $20,000 all in (Stillwater, Oklahoma) also has a strong pre-med program

If you can stretch the budget a bit, I would also suggest that you look in the University of Arkansas which places 93% of its pre-med students into medical school. Cost for you would run about $26,000 all in.

You qualify for Honor’s College at all of the schools I’ve listed, which may be worth looking into in order to get a better quality of education/smaller classes/more face time with professors/more research opportunities, etc.

** UT Austin is closer to $28K a year all in.

Good Luck.

@Richard55 is your SAT a 1260 from the new SAT or a 1260 m+cr from the old SAT?
