I will just mention that figuring out your own interests as far as possible majors should be one of the most important factors, more so that perceived prestige or status. Being in a rural location, you can still tap into great resources online like Coursera, MIT courses, EdX, to look into introductory engineering courses, computer science, energy policy, neuroscience, and so on. If you find an area you like, you can take series of courses to show your interests to colleges (maybe not for credit, but they can be listed on college applications). Some areas (comp sci, math, robotics) have contests that you can participate in independently and remotely if you don’t have school resources.
