I’m trying to determine what I should bring to UChicago to put in my dorm room and how much space I actually have in that room. (To give you some perspective, I’m probably going to end up in Blackstone, where rooms are 12 by 12.5.) Would I have space for a bookcase or a TV, etc.? Any insight is appreciated.

Once you know your dorm, you’ll be able to find out exactly how it’s furnished. Many dorm rooms already have a bookcase/bookshelf, so that would probably be unnecessary. From personal experience there tends to be plenty of space in Blackstone rooms, so additions like a TV wouldn’t be unreasonable in terms of space.

You won’t need an extra bookcase in ANY of the dorms: for reference, here are the things your room will definitely come with:

Bed (twin XL)
Desk
Desk Chair
Dresser
Bookcase or Bookshelves
Light fixture of some kind (some rooms only have overhead lights; older dorms like Snell-Hitchcock also have a reading lamp)
Blinds
Garbage Can
Full-length mirror
Closet or armoire

Some dorms (S-H, B-J, Breck, Maclean, and Blackstone-- to my knowledge) also have an armchair for reading.
