Sorry for all the questions, etc, but… I have made a really clear cut list of what I am planning to bring to college, but I wanted some feedback from UT students as to what is necessary and what isn’t necessary.
… And obviously clothes.

Is that too much, is that too little? Are my ideas for storage really not feasible?

Much of the stuff I’m bringing isn’t going to be like a lot, it’s all going to be in moderation, it’s just on my list, so I remember to supply it the first time.

That’s a really big list, and I’m bored, so here are my opinions listed next to each item:

Again, hookemhorns0, if you would search the forums, your questino would already have been answered.

condoms are available for free at student health services.

Last year, they gave out free planners at natural sciences advising office and the engineering student council

Xtra,

I love how everyone completely avoids reading the context of my sentence. If you’d read the very first paragraph, it states that I already have a list, and was wondering what applied to UT. I’m not going to search threads created 3 years ago, because guess what? Things change on campus every year to some extent.

I was asking how my list related to UT, not is this all that I need.

Y2K,

Thanks. That’s what I was asking. Let me cross some stuff off - may have a few responses for you either way.

Definitely bring the bug spray. Reasonable DEET concentration. Depending on your dorm, bed risers might be very helpful for creating space under the bed for storage tubs. (They won’t work in jester or kinsolving.) No folding chairs (no room) or mirror (there is one). One kind of cleaner is good - windex works on other things besides windows, you know. Cup or mug - you know if you ever drink coffee, tea, or cocoa. If you don’t, you won’t need one. Coffee maker? unless you LOVE your coffee, you can probably get by with the microwave.
Quarters for laundry - not needed. Printer? between you and roommate you need a printer. Not two.

Thanks for helping me narrow down the list. If I never need anything other than what’s on the below list, I can always plan to get it somewhere, but this is what I will bring either way -

= Electronics =

Thanks for your input, Midwest. I think I’ve narrowed some of the stuff down. I’m not sure how much I would drink coffee in college. I know that I drink it a lot at home, but I also have a coffee maker that does individual cups, not a whole pot.

I’m going to cross out things you probably won’t need, along with my own comments. This from your most recent list. I’ve also added a few items, notated with ++

= Electronics =
Alarm Clock
Batteries, all sizes - get them there, only if needed. I didn’t need them.
Digital Camera and power cord
Cell Phone and charger
Laptop, power cord, and sleeve case - if your backpack has it’s own sleeve case, no need for a separate one
All-in-one printer - I print a lot of things too. Copier was useful.
Mouse
Ethernet cable
Earburds (2)
iPod
Small desktop fan
Flashlight
Extension Cords and power strips - extension cord’s aren’t allowed. Use a surge protector instead. If it has a light as an on/off switch, then it’s allowed. Daisy chaining isn’t allowed either even if outlets are in inconvenient locations, so get a surge protector with a long cord
Netflix Subscription - not needed
Television, cable jumper, and DVD player - share? - yes, share. Decide who brings what.
Coffee maker - share? share if one person brought it, although not really necessary unless you drink coffee every day

= Important Information =
Checkbook - use debit card instead, easier to carry
$100 cash - I didn’t mean to carry around, I meant for emergencies. Will bring anyways.
Credit / Debit Cards
Pictures of Friends and Family - for your room, doubt you’ll need these in your wallet
Social Security Card - didn’t need it for anything, just need UT ID card
Copy of Birth Certificate - didn’t need it, UT EID and UT ID card works for everything on campus
++ Drivers License - as second form of id
++ wallet or card holder - as a student, always keep your license and UT id with you. I also kept my debit card and a bit of emergency cash with me too

= Recreational =
Bicycle, Bicycle Lock (2), and Helmet - its suggested that you have a U lock and cable lock both
Gym Bag
++ dial lock - for if you’re using a locker at the gym

= Stationary / School Supplies =
Backpack
Binders - get at Co-Op
College - ruled paper - get at Co-Op
Index Cards - get there, only if needed
Sharpies - get there, only if needed
Tape
Blank CDs (10-15) - maybe, if really needed
Folders
Portable Holepunch
Printer Paper - bring to campus, buy online when you run out
White-out tape
Labels (assorted sizes) - not really needed
Flashdrive (2)
Hilighters - maybe 2-3
Post-it notes - small stack
Stapler and staples - small one works
Paper clips and rubber bands - a few paper clips, no rubber bands
Calculator
Dry Erase Board / Bulletin Board combination
Dry Erase Markers and thumbtacks
Scissors
Pens and Pencils
Notebooks
Stamps
Stationary - not needed
Envelopes - not really needed

(NOTE: you don’t need to bring a lot of school supplies with you, just a FEW basics like pens, pencils, a pack of paper, highlighter. Reduce the space taken up by these in your car and just get the rest of them (spirals, binders, etc.)at the Co-Op, Target, or HEB when you get to school, only as you need them)

= Laundry / Linens =
Hangers
Backpack Laundry Bag - (hamper)
3-in-1 dryer/washer sheets
Drying Rack - just buy overdoor hooks instead, saves floor space
Mattress Pad
Sheets (2)
Blanket or Comforter
Pillows (3) - 2 will work
Lint Roller
Washcloths
Towels

= Odds and Ends =
Portable Hand vaccum - dorms have vacuums you can borrow instead
Clorox Wipes
Febreeze
Sponge and Dish soap
Disposable bowls, plates, and utensils - bring 1 microwaveable bowl and plate, and 2 sets utensils and just wash them instead of buying disposables
Glassware (2 cups, 2 tumblers) - 2 cups or 1 of each is enough
Posters and Room Decorations
Removable Adhesive for Posters
Umbrella
Kitchen Knife - plastic/metal butter knife worked well with cutting veggies, fruits, etc.
Can opener and bottle opener
Coffee mug
Kleenex
Air freshener - you already mentioned febreeze
Paper towels
Area rug - decide with your roommate who will bring it
Tools (screwdriver and hammer)
Duct Tape
Playing Cards - if needed
Ziploc bags
Water Filter Pitcher
Water bottles - 1 will do

= Hygiene =
Shampoo
Liquid Soap
Acne cream
Acne face wash
Contact case, water, and extra contacts - contact solution
Lotion
Eye glasses
Mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrush, toothbrush case, and dental floss
Comb

Deoderant and cologne
Razor, shaving cream, aftershave
Nail clippers
Sewing Kit
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Vitamins

= First Aid =
Bandaids
Digital Thermometer
OTC Medications
Antibacterial cream - get when needed
Antiinflammatory cream - get when needed
Antiitch cream- get when needed
Alcohol swabs

= Storage =
Use luggage as under bed storage (multi-use)
Shelving or bookcase - if really needed
Laundry tote and shower tote
Bedside pocket - not needed
Small desk drawers/organizer - if needed
Lockbox or locking trunk w/ tray
6" bed risers
Vaccum storage bags for out of season clothes
Storage crates - 2 big plastic bins for underbed storage will work

When packing to travel, just travel light and use the storage bins and other things to put as many items as you can in. Bring what you know for sure you’ll need, such as clothes, but not things that you maybe might need. All your toiletries and school supplies can be bought when you get to campus as you need them so don’t overclutter your dorm with these things as soon as you get here. You might find that you take all your notes on computer and don’t even need as many spirals and binders.

Thanks so your advice. So basically worry about how I’m going to store things, and just get started, and then as the weeks/months move on replenish my school supplies (or get what the professor asks for) and grab hygiene items as needed.

Is running to HEB or Target while on campus really a pain in the ass or not? I’m planning on bringing a car, because I live in-state and will want to drive home without having to ask other people for rides, etc.

^ H-E-B and Walmart are easy to get to if you have a car. H-E-B is still easy to get to via UT shuttle. However Wal-mart is almost impossible to get to without a car.

I suggest buying a first aid kit rather than each of the items listed under “first aid” individually. I bought one my freshman year and I never had to use it for anything other than a bandaid, but just in case it had everything you listed and more. It will also probably save you a few bucks this way and some space.

This is so useful… thank you.

Oh and depending on where you live, I also suggest bringing a big pack of toilet paper and your lady products if you are a girl. Those aren’t fun things to buy so it’s good to stock up. Also depending on where you live, you might need laundry quarters. Dobie will require them, but I know on campus dorms don’t.

Wow, this is an insane list and very unnecessary. Have you never traveled or moved to a new house/apartment? Its essentially the same thing. Just bring yourself, cloths, and the essentials. Paper towels, digital thermometer? Your not going to a third world country and you don’t need a digital thermometer, ever. Your going to end up going to Walmart to buy stuff like this on a monthly basis. Talk to your roommate before you bring a t.v. though. You don’t need to bring medical information, birth certificate, etc. I would bring a Alarm clock if thats what your use to.

Spend more time prepping yourself for the stressful studying to come rather than stuff like this. And btw, theres already numerous threads on what to bring to college and its not going to be different if it is applied to UT.

DenuMz,

No, I’ve never moved into a new house, apartment, or dorm. I’ve only traveled and have no reason to cut down what I actually need because I’m not moving anywhere. Each school is going to provide different things and have different systems where some things may not be required or worthwhile bringing. That was the purpose of this thread. Pretty much everything that you just individually stated was already removed from the list because someone actually gave a reasoning. It wouldn’t have been on my list if all the other websites and threads had said it wasn’t necessary. The purpose of this thread was to CUT DOWN the list based on what UT has to offer.

kaygar - You didn’t need bug spray? My D got eaten alive running around campus at night at the beginning of freshman year. I bet you were in the library studying. :)
