What to buy as a thank you gift for a piano teacher?

My recently graduated son is doing a senior recital soon. His piano teacher has taught him since Kindergarten. I feel like I should buy a thank you gift for her but I’m stumped as to what to get and how much to spend.

She is a former music professor. Her husband is also a professor. I don’t know if they drink and I’m pretty sure she’s allergic to flowers.

Ideas?

Gift certificate to a theatre to see a live performance musical or play?

Did you ask your son for ideas? Seems if he has known her since K, he might have an idea of some of her likes/interests???

How about a gift certificate to a local music store??

A gift certificate to an online sheet music company would be appreciated. Another nice touch would be to get a photo of the two of them and get it framed.

$100 Amazon Giftcard

I think a gift card to a nice restaurant can be appreciated by anybody (well, maybe not children, but you get what I mean).

Amazon or restaurant gift certificate would be my choice. Either could be substantial enough to fit the occasion, while allowing enough flexibility to make them welcome and useful gifts.

Although I am sure the teacher treasures her relationship with your son and has enjoyed seeing his mastery of piano grow over the years, I wouldn’t do a photo or similarly personal token. Most of the teachers I know would love to hear news about your son’s path in the future, but would be unlikely to display a photo, plaque or similar item. The exception would be teachers with classrooms, who might display such gifts near their desks.

A nice note from you and your son would be a thoughtful touch.

Congrats to your son!

Our kids both studied two instruments until HS graduation…and started when they were in elementary school.

For DS’s trumpet teacher…he played in a summer music festival. We found out his favorite restaurant there…and got a generous gift certificate to that.

Both kids had the same piano teacher. For the final recital, we got a huge bouquet of roses, in a nice vase. And we gave her a gift card to a local music store where she bought all of her music.

For DD’s other instrument teacher, we were personal family friends. We went out, and treated. And gave the teacher a large selection of teas and some nice bone china tea mugs.

A personal note from your son, perhaps including some photos of the two of them taken over the years.

Gift cards, meals, something they’re into. Please nothing with “cute” music notes or piano designs. One teacher at a local music school was delighted to receive the gift of free parking at the garage adjacent to the school, but that might not suit your situation.
