What to do about the peeling paint on my car roof?

The silver paint is coming off the roof of my 1995 Dodge Intrepid in sheets, but the car has < 100,000 miles and runs just fine. I’m not willing to put the money into the car to repaint it, but it would be good if it didn’t look like a pinto (the horse, not the car), and I don’t want the bare spot under the peeled paint to rust. Given that I live in Georgia, carefully-laid duct tape could be a viable aesthetic measure, and might even be reasonably close to the color of the rest of the car. There are magnetic signs and bumper stickers available - great alternatives to repainting, but I’ve never seen them on roofs. Any other ideas out there?

You can go the same route as my H did to repair the door of our first car: a can of Bondo, a rubber mallet, sand paper, primer and a can of paint somewhat color-matched (from an auto parts store). Just skip the Bondo and the mallet part. H’s repair job was a quite notch above duct tape
Another option: low-price chain body shops like MAACO do spot-repainting for not a whole lot of $$. We chose their cheapo service to paint the truck’s side when H scratched it really badly. So far, six years later, the paint has not peeled off. The truck got many more scratches and dents since then, but H can’t care less now. Of course, there are many disappointed MAACO customers out there, but in our case it was money well spent.

Yes. Find a local vocational school that teaches paint and body work. You’ll end up with some orange peel, but so what? If that fails, check your local body shops for a young employee who’s looking to “move up” career-wise. Oftentimes the shops will let employees borrow the facility after-hours for practice. (You probably already know that peeling paint is a popular “option” on many mid-nineties Chrysler products.)

Good thoughts! I wonder if a business would like to shrink-wrap my car as a rolling billboard? My son would love to drive a Chick-fil-A-mobile!

I sanded the roof of my 87’ ford taurus a little bit, washed it, dried it, then put paper over the windows and went over it with a couple cans of clear spray paint. Less than 20 bucks, and it prevents rust. Not great looking, but then again, who are you trying to impress?
