What to do about these scores?

My D got an 1870 (550 CR, 720 M, and 600 W)on her May SAT, after getting 150 and 157 (47 2 years in a row on CR) respectively on her Sophomore and Junior PSATs. She has a 27 on the ACT 33 M, 29 S, 24 E, and 20 R).

My question is, should she send the SAT scores to all but her reach schools, in case she does worse on the next SAT. Should she not even bother to take the SAT again (she has been studying and working with a tutor this entire school year, so I wonder if this is the best she will do), and just focus on the ACT (retaking June 9th). I am reasonably confident that she can do a little better on the ACT. She ran into timeing issues on the reading but managed to get a 30 on the last PR practice test she took. If she could get a 600 on the CR it would be ok, but I wonder if there is just a limit as to how well some kids can do on certain sections.

In addition, she is 4th (possibly higher) in her class of 489 students, and has a GPA of 102+.

Also, she has already sent her SAT 2’s (760 Math 1 and 650 Chem) to the schools she is interested in.

Any input would be most appreciated!

colleges will recieve all sat grades

Colleges look at your best scores so it’s not really a bad idea for her to take the SAT again.

I don’t believe in a limit for people’s scores assuming that they’re reasonably intelligent (looking at your D’s GPA, I’d say she’s smart). Practicing and adapting your mind to the SAT will REALLY help your score.

Oh, and SAT II math level 1 is harder than the reasoning test math so if she could get a 760 on that, then a 760+ on the reasoning test’s math isn’t a stretch…

Can your D retake the SAT in October with the summer to prepare? I mean the May test was only 4 weeks ago. I’d focus on the ACT since it’s YOUR CHOICE which grades to send–if she’s that good in Math she might be able to get the science grade up-- timing is a huge thing with the ACT…so I bet the reading, maybe English grades will go up too if she does practice tests(REAL ACT Book)… if she does well enough then skip future SATs (ask a college counselor if they agree with this idea!!)!

There’s no harm in sending the scores now if you’re worried she’ll go down next time. If she does, then the first schools see only the higher scores. If she actually goes up, you can re-send them to the first schools.

The only caveat, as noted above, is that she may decide not to send the SAT scores at all if her ACT is appreciably higher.

Thank you, everyone, for all of the good advice! Well, she has been studying for the ACT, and she scored a 30 in the reading and at 27 in the english on her last Princeton Review practice tests. She has not yet studied the science section, so maybe that will go up a little as well! An additional 12 points will get her to a 30, and she is already up 13 based on the practice tests. Hopefully, these practice tests are fairly accurate! (When she is finished with PR she will work on REAL ACT)

So now that she has been doing a little better on the ACT, we have decided NOT to send the SAT scores yet. If she happens to do better on the next SAT that would be great, but if not, it looks like she will be better off sending the ACT scores only. She has already sent her SAT 2s, so that will not be an issue.

As for the October test, I really don’t think that she can drastically improve over the summer. She has literally been working on this test since last summer, and she is pretty much done (mentally!). She improved her score 300 points from the PSAT, but the CR practice tests never get much past 600, and she has taken a lot of them!

I’m hoping that she can swing at least a 29 on the ACT, and if so, she may even retake in September. (I love the fact that she can choose to send only the scores she is happy with!)

Thanks again, and good luck to all!
