I’m not looking for research internships or clinical ones, but rather something that would help me build character. What type of job should I be looking for? Where would I look for them?

Thanks!

Working in a soup kitchen or food pantry. In this economy, I imagine you’ll see things you might not otherwise see.

I helped out in a soup kitchen while I was in London, and it was an eye-opening experience. I ended up writing about it in my personal statement when I applied to medical school.

Study abroad? I’m sure anywhere you go would be a great personal experience, on multiple levels.

actually, I spoke with my parents, and if I want to stay in San Diego, I would have to pay for rent/tuition.
Any ‘character-building’ position that pays? Doesn’t have to be high or anything, just as long as I have some form of income.

thanks a lot!

Just about any job builds character and helps you realize more about the world. As for something fun, I’d suggest camp counselor (you’ll get to be outside all summer, which is wonderful). A friend of mine was a deckhand on a sailboat and got to travel around South America…you of course would have to know how to sail. Also, not all research is in a lab. A friend of mine studied giant turtle behavior and spent the summer living in a beach house and spending her nights watching mothers lay their eggs on the beach. And got paid for it…
