What to do if I don't get in?

If I don’t get into a top 25 law school, I probably won’t attend because the field of law I want to pursue focuses heavily on LS prestige. (I’m entering my fourth year at uni and will be taking the LSAT soon.)

Then what? I’ve been planning on law since my sophomore year of high school, and I’m just thinking what would I do…

What field of law is it that demands a top 25 law school?

business/international/corporate–they tend to recruit from only the top schools. i want to work abroad and in a large city as well.

If you don’t get in, my advice is to get a job with a large multi-national company. Because plenty of people who work on “deals” are not attorneys. In fact, corporate attorneys sometimes complain that they are left to chase commas while the business guys do the more interesting stuff.

If you go to work for one of the companies that corporate attorneys typically represent, you might end up involved in the sort of work that interests you, either directly with the company, or because you later get a business degree.

Also, by going to work, you might learn that you have other interests.

By the way, I’m surprised that someone so young would be so interested in corporate law. I would have thought that most high schoolers who want to become attorneys envision themselves doing courtroom type work.

JMHO.

It’s usually a good idea to have a plan B, but here, I think you shouldn’t worry about this until (at a minimum) you get your LSAT score back. Is your GPA OK at this point?

uh my GPA is around 3.7 according to my university, it’s probably lower considering the LSAC weighs A- as 3.677. Basically, I’m at the borderline. I need a really competitive LSAT to get into a top 20 school. I’m hoping to just get into ONE of the top schools, because I do have ECs, leadership but they aren’t that impressive while my GPA is pretty mediocre.

hmm lskinner,I know, but corporate is kind of related to my major and I planned on majoring in it since high school. haha, I guess maybe I had no idea how hard corporate attorneys work and how stressed they are.

I’m not sure exactly what they do, but when I worked in the litigation department of a corporate law firm, it did seem like the corporate people worked long hours.

Anyway, I would suggest that you formulate your Plan A in a little more detail before you start working on Plan B. Because there are a lot of really unhappy lawyers out there and you need to make sure you want to be an attorney before going to law school.

Needadvice: Here are some more plan B thoughts.

What will you do if you get into a top 25 law school but finish in the bottom half of the class? Half the people in those schools do, you know. The fact that the top firms recruit in the top schools doesn’t mean that all of the graduating seniors will get those jobs. You might be one who does but then again …

If getting one of those top jobs, working in one of those top places, is the only reason for you to go to law school, do some more thinking.
