What to do if the invitation says "no gifts"

Just curious if the “I need to bring SOMETHING” crowd is at all rethinking their stance based on some of the posts here. Your need to bring something is actively inconveniencing the host or the guest of honor- does that change your mind somewhat?

There are some gifts that are so thoughtful at some times (an ice cream cake dropped off by a friend when you’ve had a rotten week) that are just too much at others (that same ice cream cake handed to you at your doorstep when you’re hosting a big party and have zero freezer space left and are you supposed to just let the thing sit in its ginormous Carvel box on the counter to melt all evening? And it’s not big enough to serve anyway?).
