What to do if you ask a question and prof gives answer to entirely different question

Or in other words, you think, “I think you’re answering the wrong question”. Except that it’s hard to say that explicitly since there’s the potential that he still might answer the wrong question again (there have been times when this has happened three times in a row) and since I have to be as nonoffensive/non-confrontational as possible.

And how often does this happen? Admittedly I do have attention deficit disorder (so I often forget his exact answer only seconds after he makes the answer - in other words, I often forget it unless I write it down) but I don’t want to bring this up since it will often be seen as an excuse and since it might make the prof think lower of me (also I would actually prefer it if the prof didn’t know my name). Anyways, I’d like this question answered as if it applied to anyone in particular, not just with someone with ADD

Thanks!

Its not just you…its classic answering the question they hear/want to answer rather than what was actually asked. Profs and politicians are the two biggest offenders, followed closely by NFL head coaches. My advice is say, I’m sorry, I’m still a little confused and try to ask it a different way.

the fault could be yours. use clearer language in your question, or think first before asking something that may not make sense.

yea it happens to me sometimes too, its great when another person has the exact same question and they speak up after the professor didnt answer it correctly
i would usually hold on to the question, and if it is not answered throughout the entire lecture, then i’d go to ask him/her after class

“What I was trying to say earlier was…” and clarify. That simple…if your prof is still not understanding, just give up and ask via email (rephrasing what you wanted to ask, with the help of a friend)

File the question away and ask later (maybe ask someone else).

either ask it again or talk to the professor after class about it

Corner the professor after the lecture and ask it again, rephrasing it. Sometimes if the class is particularly big or the professor is particularly old, they don’t quite hear the question properly.

LOL I’ve had this happen so many times it’s not even funny. I get annoyed and when they say: “did I answer your question?” I just lie and say “yeah.” My thing is, I don’t want to waste any more class time than necessary. I’d rather just explicitly re-ask him the question during office hours or through email.

You interrupt him and say “No. No. You’re not just gonna blow me off. This is what I was asking you.”

If he kicks you out, you get up and approach him and if he gets scared, then you smile and leave so that the rest of the class can see that you’re the boss.

ROFLMAOOOOOOO. I would secretly die if someone did that at my school. That’d be hilay. Hahaha

After he or she answers, ask the question again with new wording, as if it were a second question… Usually works for me
