What to do if you're a science fail?

I…just can’t do science. It’s really bad. The last time I took it (which, admittedly, was January of sophomore year). I got 27 math, 27 reading, 27 science and a 35 in English for a 29 composite. I know that my reading and math have improved, and I’m taking a class and stuff, but I’m really worried about my science. I heard that the PR book was skimpy on it. I heard Barron’s was good? But Barron’s sells a lot of different books.

The Science section on the ACT is not your typical science. They have many questions on there that test your knowledge of referring back to information and analyzing data.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!!

Hire a tutor if your that desperate.

Find a way to get a 36 on Reading, English and Math and even if you score a 27 on the Science you can still make out with a 34.

Science really isn’t as bad as you’re making it seem; it’s just a test to see how well you can interpret stuff that you’ve never seen before. You’re not going to learn the material like you will in math or reading. There’s not set formula to memorize that will amount to an increased score, if you’ve taken a physics, chemistry, and biology class, then you’re set for the test.

Take some practice tests to assess yourself. (Make sure that it’s not a Barron’s test.) Once you’re done, go over the questions that you got wrong and see why you got them wrong. There’s a ton of tests out there, the more you take and analyze, the less the new information will scare you. The science test really is much more psychologically prepared than information ready, if you’re too pessimistic, you’ll do poorly.

Practice, practice, practice. Try doing science problems out of the redbook, personally I thought Barron’s sucked and had extraneous info. As OregonSenior said, science gets a pretty bad rap but it’s actually not as hard as you think. Study hard and in between breaks watch Bill Nye (the science guy)!

I thought I was pwning this science section in the red book, so I checked my answers, missed 4, and saw that -4 equaled a 29 on that particular test. *** is up with that???

OR…just switch to the SAT, if none of what was suggested above works.

Yeah, I’m getting my January SAT stuff soon. =) I just live in a state where it’s required to take the ACT (plus I’m applying to many midwestern schools) so I figured I might as well get good at it.

Any book suggestions, though?

The Science section is very similar to the Reading section. Some of the questions are directly out of the text (or graph) while others require you to make inferences based on the information provided. If you have a hard time with Science just try doing it like it’s the Reading test just with graphs and charts.
