I may be going to Atlanta. I have always had problems at their airport; this time it’s a direct flight there.
It’s not my choice to go there for a conference, but, there you go. I will be there for 4 days. Suggestions?
walk the beltline. it’s really fun with lots of col bars and eateries with outdoor patios all along it and great people-watching.
This is a cool place to have some drinks or a dinner!
@aunt_bea we have an office in Atlanta - one of the best events we did when visiting was a Segway tour of the city. Very cool and informative - https://www.virginexperiencegifts.com/georgia/atlanta/midtown-atlanta-segway-tour
Hi–I live in Atlanta, and for more tourist-friendly sites, I recommend the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca-Cola. The World of Coca-Cola is really cheesy, but a good weird visit. If you want a mellow place to hang out, take the Marta train or an Uber to downtown Decatur (kind of a suburb in the city) and eat at one of the restaurants and walk around the square.
Restaurants in midtown Atlanta:
Miller Union, Ecco (high-end). Hsu’s Chinese (I haven’t been there, but it’s affordable and I’ve heard good things)
I just went to the website, and the restaurant is moving, so temporarily closed, but for future readers of this thread:
One of the best restaurant experiences of my life. It is very pricey, so more for a special occasion, but everything about the experience was memorable.
We went last week and hit all of the tourist stops. The aquarium was extraordinary. S24 loved it. The zoo was great too but not as impressive as the aquarium. We stayed in midtown at the Curio. It was nice, attached food court with great restaurants and they were very helpful.
What part of Atlanta will you be staying in?
Oakland Cemetery is having some work done, but if it’s completed and open…go there. Do a docent led tour. Really, it’s fabulous and a history of Atlanta as well as the south. Totally terrific.
I loved the CNN Tour as well.
Where are you staying and can you get around easily?
Came here to recommend the same.
Also, just south of Ponce City Market (which was mentioned above), The Old Fourth Ward (includes the King Historic District), Inman Park, and Cabbagetown. (All of this is close to part of the BeltLine…and Oakland Cemetery is close to Cabbagetown and not that far from the Zoo).
Downtown, but we may be changing hotels because of the awful reviews.
Downtown and we’re not sure if we’re going to get a rental because parking is $35 a night at this hotel, but even though the company is reimbursing, I still don’t want that charge.
The Great Wall Supermarket has amazing chinese food.
I was hoping someone e would mention World of Coca-Cola! I’ve only been to Atlanta once, but we stopped there on our way out of town using free tickets from MyCokeRewards (I used to be a Diet Coke addict). One of the highlights was the photo op with the Coke bear.
Jimmy Carter Library - I’ve lived here 36 years and just went a few weeks ago for the first time. It brought back so many memories of my first time voting, etc. Regardless of political background Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter (deceased) are incredible human beings. I read his older book titled “An Hour Before Daylight” just last summer and was fascinated by the rurality of southern Georgia and learned he really didn’t grow up poor but grew up with very strong principles that he never deviated from his entire life.
Lots of good suggestions to pick from based on what you prefer and the weather.
The Coke museum and aquarium are fun and in the same area. I really like the history center and there is lots around there - the Swan House, some shopping, etc. I have not seen the cyclorama since it moved there. You can grab a quick lunch at Souper Jenny’s or lunch at the Swan Coach House. We always enjoy the botanical gardens.
A favorite restaurant is South City Kitchen in midtown.
We loved south city kitchen
Definitely suggest midtown area. There was tons to do and eat. We stayed at the Starling hilton curio midtown
