I just recently learned that Yale kicks students out come Christmas time. I think the Yale Glee Club allows its members to tour a few places over the break, which is great because 1) I like singing, and 2) I really don’t want to fork over $1000+ for a two-way plane ticket to go home and then come back to Yale in January. Travelling with the Yale Glee Club should be cheaper, I think. Are there any other clubs that host similar “tours”?

I don’t know where you live but I brought my son home for Thanksgiving AND Xmas to South Florida from Hartford for $128rt and $134rt

Last winter one of the a cappella groups was touring down here and we hosted 7 of them I think, for a few days. I don’t know how they work their finances, but I know they had to rent a few cars, they went out to eat (they only ate breakfast at our home). If any didn’t have a host to stay with, I guess they’d have to pay for a room. I would think touring for a month vs going home would cost quite a bit more.

My S didn’t come home for spring break. Instead he went to visit friends in Chicago and Peoria, IL, then flew to visit friends in the Boston area. He flew and took trains and a bus. Again, the plane fare was extremely cheap, less than $150 to fly BDA to Chicago and then Chicago to Boston. He said the train was also cheap and so was the bus.

Good luck!

Did you use an online travel agent site like Expedia or Travelocity? I live in Canada, and the cheapest tickets I could find from my city to New Haven were about $450.

don’t fly out of/into Tweed- New Haven. Hartford is better and it’s an hour away. Yale has a deal with CT Limo to get us cheaper shuttles to Hartford.

Ginny, there’s a lot of ways to go about finding cheaper tickets, but it does take time on the computer. Not sure where in Canada you are, p/m me and I can try to give you some sites to keep under your favorites.

If you have been accepted and are committed to going to Yale, I’d be thinking about booking your tickets for Aug and not even worry about Xmas at this time - too many things can chance between now and then.

EDM is absolutely correct about flying in the BDL instead of Tweed. CT Limo will bring you to the school. Of course, if it’s not that big of a price difference of the two then HVN airport is fine because of the CT LIMO cost. They did have a new student backed service during spring break that was REALLY cheap and probably took a ton of business from CT LIMO, so hoping that will be back.

You might also take a look at LaGuardia in New York. It requires a train into Grand Central and a bus or cab out to LaGuardia, but many airlines fly there and you can get reasonably priced fares to many destinations. For instance, Detroit to LaGuardia RT for $199. You can also take CT Limo to LaGuardia.

Be creative and a bit adventuresome and you can save a lot of money!

Really? They kick us out during Christmas break? I had no idea…

I thoguht just the dining halls closed.

No, you’re thinking of Princeton. Both Yale and Harvard close the residences over Christmas break.

Well, no, I live here… I just had no idea they actually forced us to leave.

I don’t think they do over christmas. I remember the master having christmas for students staying in new haven. maybe it has changed.

I think they’ve changed it now. The academic calendar states “Undergraduate residences close” around December 20-something.
