Hey, I want to do Pre-med but don’t necessarily want to major in Science, I know they say you don’t have to major in a science but will it greatly help your chances if you do?

I don’t really know much about the Pre-med program, but I was talking to a professor of mine a few days ago, and she mentioned that she highly recommends that pre-med students major in something different. (This is personal opinion, but…). You’ll take plenty of bio courses and other sciences in med school, and with the pre-med program. It’ll be good to have branched out and have another skill-set/knowledge-base.

Your choice of major is relatively unimportant although it should be a “serious major.” I would not in general pick something like hotel management! (apologies to any hotel management majors out there). Majoring in something less common but relevant (religious studies, anthro, econ, etc) could even be a plus.

The key to getting into medical school is similar to a very competitive college. Do extremely well in everything. Do extremely extremely well in the prereqs (which may change somewhat over the next 5 years- the jury is out on this one). Have good MCATs. Medical school interviews are not that bad. They already know all about your academic prowess- mostly its making sure as best they can that you have reasonably good social skills and feeling out your degree of commitment and motivations.

Also, please make sure you really want to go to medical school for the right reasons. I have seen many students and residents over the years who are too far into it to quit but are in it for the wrong reasons and very unhappy.
