What to do--smokless tobacco

The guy that sat next to my last semester used smokeless tobacco. It grossed me out b/c I could see it running down the inside of his clear bottle. It was so gross that I couldn’t seem to pay attention to the teacher at all. I’m not good at confronting people. What should I do if this ever happens in the future?

you mean chewing tobacco? I would politely ask him to stop in class because i agree it’s disgusting. I know people who do it and yeah, they should be polite enough to do it subtly or not at all.

Have you considered talking to the prof and asking that use of smokeless tobacco in class not be allowed? I think that few profs would think that spitting tobacco into a bottle in class would be acceptable.

Why didn’t you just change seats?

i may transfer! in every school here it is strictly forbidden within the buildings and within 25 ft of the doors.

drives me up the wall to do without. those who use nicotine actually need it to maintain focus on learning material. i quit once during sp 07, went plumb stupid. couldn’t read nor concentrate, even at home. i did some research and the effect is akin to attention deficit. so i chew, but in class i use nicotine gum.

the person really shouldn’t do that in class. but if there are rules, you may get him suspended by complaining. if it bothers you change seats, talk to him or get him a plastic root beer bottle (dark Brown). he should not get testy about it if you let him know it bothers you, if he does i don’t blame you for complaining to the professor.

I’m surprised that’s allowed inside… but I suppose the easiest thing to do is just don’t sit near him. It’s uncommon for college classes to have assigned seats so that’s likely the easiest way to solve the problem without causing a confrontation.

ok, girl…

you can do this without asking for advice. (really!)

I would have changed seats, but the only empty one was the one that was even closer to him. I just wanted to know if I should have complained to the teacher or what because I know it’s not allowed in class. Do you think that asking someone you kinda know in the class to say something to him would be childish? I just kinda wanted to know if I was over-reacting about the whole deal or what.

I know that I need to be more forward about things, but it’s just hard to go from being shy to being forward about things.

I really do think that your overreacting. His use of smokeless tobacco does not, in any way, put your health in jeopordy. Nor is he offering you any, much less forcing it upon you. So, your finding the habbit gross is not really grounds to stop him.

Is it against the rules? You say it is, so I’ll assume that is in fact true. But does that make complaining to the prof valid? No, I don’t think so. Would you turn in somebody who wasn’t 21 but was drinking at a party? I would hope not. And frankly, that is potentially far more dangerous to other people than a guy keeping a wad of crap in his mouth and spitting a bit. So suck it, and let him be.

I’m very, very tough on those who object to the various smoking laws that protect non-smokers from second-hand smoke. But even I think this is overreacting. If you find it disgusting, don’t look at it. It’s that simple. It’s not like smoking, it doesn’t harm you, and you must be trying very hard to pay attention to it if you notice it that much.

In the same way I would dismiss anyone who finds chewing gum disgusting enough to complain, I really think the problem here is with you, not the person chewing tobacco.

God I love dip…
