I am a sophomore in high school and I have looked upon colleges in Boston (where I really want to go to college) and University of Massachusetts-Boston has caught my eye. All the other colleges do not have the major I plan to major in (history - I want to be a history teacher when I’m older) or my GPA is lower than the average GPA of those colleges. My overall GPA right now is 3.19. Freshman year I had a 3.38 but it dropped this year.
The average GPA for University of Massachusetts Boston is 3.2. But I also read on another website that it is 3.16. I know my GPA is around there, but I wanna be absolutely sure this college won’t deny me just for my GPA. So I really hope to increase my GPA.
Freshman I did not extracurricular activities or sports. But this year I am doing many extracurricular activities.
-I was the manager for my school’s field hockey team for 2/3 of the season, this year.
-I’m in the Leo Club (We do lots of community service - I am also the leader (Along with another person) for apart of the community service we are doing; babysitting kids at a school. We are babysitting the kids for 7 weeks
-Yearbook committee
-I am a history tutor
-I’m apart of the tech crew for my school’s play; Costume crew, Scenic design, and Wigger crew, Hair + Makeup crew as well
-I also had an internship as an English Teacher Assistant for Semester 1
My school also grants you an award if you achieve receive 6+ Social Studies credits (Which I plan on doing, so I hope to receive that award) I heard it looks amazing on your transcript.
I’m also in HONORS history. I was thinking of doing A.P US History next year, but I got a B- for Semester 1 for Honors History, so I don’t know how well I would do in A.P.
What else should I do to get accepted into University of Massachusetts-Boston? Any classes I should take? Extracurricular activities? Also, is it too late to raise my GPA? Sorry for so many questions, but thank you for reading.
No, that is not what I meant. SOME of the schools do not offer a history major (And if they do, it’s only an associates - I need my bachelors to become a history teacher [as well as my teaching license] ) OR the schools that do offer history as a major, have a higher average GPA than what my GPA actually is…sorry for the confusion.
~There may be some schools I have accidentally missed while looking at Bosron colleges, but I did look at multiple websites listing Boston colleges~
If you want to be a teacher, maybe the best route is to attend a state university such as Bridgewater State, Framingham State, or Salem State. These schools were founded originally as “teaching colleges” and are well-tuned into teacher preparation. None of them are in Boston proper, but Bridgewater State, for example, has a commuter rail station right on campus that goes right to Boston. Framingham and Salem probably run shuttles to nearby MBTA stations as well.
I am involved in hiring teachers at an eastern MA high school, and I seldom see applicants from UMass Boston, but see many from the aforementioned state universities.
UMass-Boston does have some residential buildings, but is primarily a commuter school. I read somewhere that the average age of UMB students is 25–they seem to cater to students who did not enter college directly after HS, then realize a few years later that they need more education.
Hi, I’m a current freshmen here so I would like to say that as long as your GPA stays where it is, or as long as you’re above a 3.0, make sure your SAT is higher than 1600+and you should get in. Don’t worry too much about GPA if you’re final about UMB, they accept the majority of applicants.
I would also like to say that you’re pretty young to know for certain that you want to be a history teacher. You could end up changing your mind your junior year in college, and that’s fine. I’m just saying that have a broader look towards majors and look for anything related to education. I think that UMB offers some/limited options for education but,you could always tutor.
Admission wise: be a good student, take some AP’s, have a high SAT because your GPA is average. I know friends who had about your GPA or even lower and SAT less than 1200 but they still got admitted. So don’t worry too much about Umass. Set your expectations to BU, NU,BC,etc and if you work hard and don’t get in those, you will definitely get in UMB because the admissions here is not that rigorous as compared to more selective colleges. Also, if you do end up enrolling here, great decision. The school is a great value for the affordability and there is a lot of change going on. You will have even more opportunities that I will.
Let me know if you want more advice and enjoy being in high school! That time won’t come back because college really is harder.
