I am about to start applying for art schools in the fall. I used to be an average student with a 3.6 GPA. I took honors courses and I go to a specialty art based high school for visual arts. Junior year I had a lot of personal issues. My GPA dropped to a 2.9 and my art started to be duller and I even got close to getting kicked out of the art center. I have an alcoholic father and he tried to commit suicide that year and was in rehab for 3 months, I also went through a bad break up with this girl who goes to my school and cheated on me with my friend, none of my friends told me so I was in the dark for months. So I went through a period where I was too depressed to get my work done. My school teachers know a little about my parent situation so I’m sure that I will get good teacher reviews, especially from my counselor. But that doesn’t change the fact that my GPA dropped THAT much. Whats the best way to get schools to understand my situation without pulling a pity card?? I know art schools tend to be big on personality over grades but I wanted to go to a NICE art school, like RINGLING or SVA.
- Also ask in http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/visual-arts-film-majors/ Read about how to apply to art schools.
- Make sure your GC knows what has been going on. Talk to them/school psychologist about your issues.
- Take classes you can do well in this year and do well. Show that it was an anomoly.
- Your GC will be able to include info about your family situation in their recommendation so colleges will know the reason
- I think Art schools are more interested in your portfolio…do you have one? If not talk to your Art teacher.
